Ever wonder how Nancy Zieman and I get our embroidery designs to land exactly where we want them? We use a simple – I mean, really simple – software program that outlines the garment so we know exactly where to place the embroidery.
Perfect Placement Software includes 30 outlines or garment sections plus over 70 beautiful embroidery designs. Since I work in this program all the time, I’ve printed templates of all the outlines and I keep them stored in a folder.
I go to the folder first whenever I’m embarking on a wearable project. I flip through the templates and find the one that is closest in shape and size to my garment. Then I audition the garment section on the template.
If it doesn’t fit perfectly, I move to the computer and open the program. In the program, I select the outline then tweak its shape and size to mimic my garment. Once that’s done, the fun begins.
I select a design, drop it in the outline and play with proportion, size, rotation, etc. I can add as many designs as I want and actually ‘see’ the layout before I take a stitch.
Nancy Zieman uses the same technique and wrote a terrific tute on how she embellished a collar. Click here to see how she did it.
But before you head over to Nancy’s blog, tell me what design you like best. A, B or C. We’ll pick a random comment and the lucky winner will receive a copy of Perfect Placement Software – Nancy and my secret to perfect placement!

12 years agoThank you for the opportunity to win this wonderful software!
I like all three designs, but I think I like Design C the best. Although it really would depend on what project it was being used on!
Karen Kaping
12 years agoI like Design A as it reminds me of piping and crystals.
Jacey
12 years agoI like design B. it has a variety of textures and appears whimsical to me.
Beverly Gibson
12 years agoI love all the designs, but I like Design C best because if has
flowers and design elements that face all the directions so it would be more versatile for uses. I could use it on napkins, placemats, quilts, clothing, and as borders. Thanks for all you
work and ideas.
Madelon Claterbos
11 years agoI hope website is correct, anyway I like Design C best
as the placement of the flowers and the way the colors lined up just caught my eye. Flowers of any kind are my passion!!! I can’t plant enough. Right now there are 6 vases in my house with all my different colored flowers and I take each grouping and imagine how I would embroider my jeans,or a blouse or anything with these colors. I just love watching the two of you on T.V. You both show your love for designs and your creativity shines through.
Vicki Heim
12 years agoI think all three are wonderful in their own way. Each has characteristics that would fit different types of projects. I would probably use A & B for clothing and C is a wonderful border design for about anything. Love to see more of these.
Mary
12 years agoI like B as it has interesting detail without being too heavy in design.
Cande Gordon
11 years agoI love design B. One of my favorite designs is the Peacock and I love their beautiful colors! Design B reminds me of a Peacocks extravagant tail. They are known for their beautiful feathers and what better way to display our beautiful embroidery.
Allie L
12 years agoI love design B. Perfect placement would be a great addition to my embroidery “toolkit”! I feel that placement is the hardest part to get right!
Peggy Schroeder
12 years agoHi Eileen,
I would love to win the placement kit. I don’t hold out much hope though, I never win anything!!
I think my most stressful placement was (still) the embossed horse design I have told you about before—I measured, measured, placed, moved placement, and thought I finally had it right. Stitched it out, it came out great, then when I took it off the machine, it was tilted just enough to make it unwearable! Still haven’t figured out how it happened. But you are right, I will have to dig it out of its hiding place in the back of the closet and use it for practice runs. I was afraid someone would see it, so did not even put it in the ragbag!

12 years agoI like B, for some reason makes me think of wheat and I was raised between 2 fields of wheat.

Jean Lowenberger
12 years agoI think I like view A the best, it is open and am thinking what I might embroider it on would allow the fabric to show through more than the other two designs.
Terrie
12 years agoI love all three designs! It is hard to choose just one. I would love to have all three. Guess I would have to pick A.
Kathy Elkins
12 years agoDesign B.
Linda DeRyder
12 years agoI am just getting started in embroidery and I love all the articles on your site!! There is always something new!
I love Design C, but it was hart to chose between the three!!!
Sandy Smith
12 years agoI just love watching you and Nancy on Sewing with Nancy. You two make machine embroidery look like a breeze, and I’m amazed at the tricks Nancy demonstrates to make sewing easier! While I’ve embroidered many types of items, I have been reluctant to try it on apparel because of placement issues. I’ve looked into the Perfect Placement software and longed to buy it, but retirement forces me to prioritize my spending. Although all 3 designs are beautiful, I like design B best because of the variety of stitching and how it seems to make your eyes keep moving across the design.
Sofie
12 years agoMy eyes were instinctively drawn to B out of the three designs, so that is my choice. A is a very close second.
Alicia Stovern
12 years agoI also like them all, but Design A is definitely my favorite. Its simple, but elegant.
Pamela Black
12 years agoI really was hoping to win the time you were going to give away class time on Embroidery. I know I would have learn a lot.
I love all three designs. And i really don’t want to choose. As I can see each one perfectly placed on an apparel. So I would definitely enjoy using it on some of my “Plain Jane” apparel.
Sherry Peterson
12 years agoI actually line all 3 designs, but if I have to pick only one, I guess it would be “C”
Jean
12 years agoMy favorite is C. I am intrigued by the software. I have not done much garment embroidery, yet! Thanks for the chance to win.

Shannon Bainbridge
12 years agoBut, apparently, I’m not as OCD about typos this evening. I meant to say that I like design B the best. Geez! Sorry, been dealing with a willful “terrible two” yr old today. lol
Nancy
12 years agoI like Design A the best because it isn’t as heavy as the other two. Very pretty.

Kathleen Kaminski
12 years agoI really like C The lines look so clean and exciting
Jennifer P
12 years agoI’m loving all of them but I think C is my favorite. Thanks
Lynda Ward
12 years agoI prefer B. I like the way the blue flowers provide a focal point.
Liz
12 years agoI really love Design A the most. All three are lovely, but Design A almost has a scallop design to it, which I just love. And it is light and airy. So nice! 🙂
Sue R
12 years agoI love design B as my favorite but they are all pretty. I would definitely use it on one of my favorite bag patterns.
Thanks you 🙂
Myra Williams
12 years agoDesign a. Less complex.
Joaniez
12 years agoI love all three designs but, if I must choose one it would have to be design A. I love your work and I enjoy watching Sewing with Nancy and I always wondered how you two made it look so easy!!
Cindy Broome
12 years agoI like B because it reminds me of needlework that both my grandmother and mother did by hand. I’d love to do it by machine!
Belle Plummer
12 years agoAs Oscar Wilde said, “I can stand a great deal of gilt” and I agree. I think that design C would lend itself to a lot of extra embellishment, such as crystals. All are very inspirational in that regard, though!
Michelle H
12 years agoThey are all pretty but I think C is my favorite. I would love to win this software as I think it would make embroidery so much easier
Carlyn Prince

12 years agoI like design A the best,it’s more open and airy. Hard choice because I like all the designs.
Juanita Whitfield
12 years agoHi, I’ve only been doing embroidery for a little over a year. So every thing I see looks beautiful. I love all three, but if I have to choose it would be A. It looks a little more open and airy.
Pam M
12 years agoI like C the best because it is filled out all round. I can just see it joined in a square border arrangement to make a frame on a cushion. They are all very nice though and each would be the ideal embroidery for a particular item.
Carol
12 years agoI like design A, it looks more delicate than the other two designs.
Madeline Lester
12 years agoMy favorite is design c. Would be beautiful along the bottom if a skirt or down the front of a blouse.
My most difficult garment I tried to embroidery was a button down shirt. I had a design that went across
The front across the placket. My solution came down to time and patients ( which wore very thin) I used a full templet and lots of marking. I used a lot of measuring and marking. Even though was VERY challenging it came out pretty good, but I sure wish I would of had this software it would have gone SOOOOO much smother and a lot less time. I will use this software on sooo many projects
Thank you, once again, Eileen and Nancy for making my life so much easier and with less stress involved!
Madeline L.
Shirley
12 years agoI like Design B because of its graceful and quiet flow upward, complimented by the leaves.
Judy
12 years agoDesign A- fewer points of interest; more open space to allow a “resting place” for the eye to see more aspects of the design; clean open design; less problematic for the machine to stitch.
Ellen
12 years ago‘Love all things Jacobean. Design “B” takes me there.
Rosalyn Schultze
12 years agoI like design “C” best because it has a more free-flowing aspect to it than the first two designs. It is somewhat art nouveau in feeling which is a favorite design style of mine.

12 years agoI like design A. It is not as heavy.
Placement is a bear for me. I recently sent my 2 year old grandson a train that was running “downhill”. Even he noticed it was not straight. Good thing it was just on a jammie shirt.
Cathy
12 years agoI like A as it is a little more open and “airy”. Thank you for your wonderful and informative blog just for embroiderers.
Diana Darie
12 years agoI like the B design more.look like the spring coming soon.

Laura G
12 years agoIt was hard to choose a favorite. I love the delicate look of A but I liked the swirly vines, buds and flowers in design C the best. I would like to have an elegant bed sheet with either of the designs along the top.
Thanks for the giveaway contest! I would like to try the Perfect Placement tools when adding embellishments to plain jackets and children’s clothes. I added a pretty design to the top back of a plain brown jacket and could have used the help when I tried to place it!
Jean Maumenee
12 years agoI like design A the best. All the designs are beautiful, but I prefer A.
Judy
12 years agoWow, I like all 3 of them, but after looking more closely, I think I like #1 the best.

Veronica Harper
12 years agoI really like a because it has a lighter feel then the other ones.I would really love to win this softwear, because I know it would help me a great deal when I embroider on clothing, which I like to do, but it is difficult to put the design in the exact place.
Patty Schrock
12 years agoI like c best although all of them would be great in their own project. thanks for the chance to win this great tool.
Judy M.
12 years agoI love design A because it is intricate enough to show off many different aspects of the embroidery yet it is airy to allow you to appreciate each of the diffent sections of the embroidery as well. I also think the little diamond shapes within the embroidery are a nice contrast to the easy curling design of the floral aspects. It would show up nicely on any garment.
CJG333
12 years agoPerfect placement software – how do you do it? You seem to know what I would wish for. I’ve been machine embroidering for years but really struggle with PERFECT placement. I like all the designs but prefer design B. The symmetry and accents would be beautiful on a tablecloth. With perfect placement I can get those corners right.
Thanks!
Cindy Amend

Wendy Espie
12 years agoWhile I really like all three, there is something about “A” which caught my attention — I think it is the lightness of the design.
I am fairly new to embroidery and trying to learn all I can about the many facets involved but have avoided garments because of placement problems. I appreciate the opportunity to win “Perfect Placement”.
Vicki B.
12 years agoI like design A because it’s more simple and less busy.
Rosalyn
12 years agoAll of the designs are eye catching. I prefer “A” for it’s simplicity. I can see being able to use this design on many different items.

Cindy Swol

I can see all kinds of images in it in my mind,a caterpillar??? a flower–the eye sees endless shapes!!! Thanks for all you do -you are such an inspiration.

12 years agoI love Design A. It reminds me of needed some bling with crystals to go along with it. But all a wonderful. Interesting reading how you make each design fit exactly where you want.
Kathy Anderson
12 years agoI like Design A.
Is this program like Place & Stitch Embroidery which came out in 2007? I know that the embroidery designs are different, but it seems the object of the programs are the same. I’ve used P&SE for a Christmas blouse for my mother.
eileenroche
12 years ago AUTHORHi Kathy, Perfect Placement Software uses the same concept as Place & Stitch Embroidery but since Perfect Placement is a software program, you have the ability to manipulate the designs and outlines. You can size (which the software recalculates the stitches), mirror, rotate, delete color segments and much more.
Place & Stitch Embroidery was a collection of embroidery designs that included outlines but you were not able to edit the designs. Just merge at the machine. Hope you understand!
Kathy Anderson
12 years agoThank you for the reply. I will have to put this program on my wishlist.
Linda
12 years agoMy favorite is Design A. I like the simplicity and open feeling of the design, I think it stands out better from the fabric that way. I enjoyed Nancy’s tute on placement and I think the design placement software would be helpful to anyone but since I am pretty much a newbie at machine embroidery I really think it is something that would benefit my new craft!

Tara
12 years agoI like A best. I like the way the diamonds add a little bit of visual contrast to the flowing stems, leaves, and petals in the rest of the design.
Judy G
12 years agoI like “A”. Being petite, I am drawn to less “heavy” patterns. Design “A” seems more light and airy than the other two designs.
wendy Buchanan

Juanita Whitfield
12 years agoAll are great.
Debbie S
12 years agoI love B. I can see it in a quilt border, or as a border on the bottom of a pair of capris
Juanita
12 years agoThis is difficult. Standing alone, I like A best. It has a simple flow to it that allows each design element to stand out and be noticed but yet all the element blend to form a very pretty design. The more elements that are introduced to each design, as in B and C, the less the individual elements stand out and the design appears as one element rather than a perfect blend of elements. When I think of each design on a garment, I get a visual of C down the front of a blouse or around the bottom as a border. With A and B, I see more of accept elements on a sleeve, pants leg, or purse.
They are all very pretty and any embroiderer would love all three.
Thank you for your give-aways and for introducing and explaining different products for your readers.

12 years agoOh, they are all so beautiful, but if I had to choose just one, I think it would be “B”. I love the scrolling and tiny leaves. Just so delicate.
Donna Jones
12 years agoI like “C” the best because it doesn’t appear to be a one-way design. If I ever won it I would be in shock for at least a week.
Terri Beck
12 years agoI would love love love to win this please. A is my favorite because I think sometimes less is more.

12 years agoYou know, I am feeling lucky! I became a “Nana” for the first time yesterday! A is my favorite because it is less “cluttered” and more open spaces. You can appreciate the design more. It would be nice to win this so I can make Maya SO many beautiful things!
Barbara Riegsecker
12 years agoWhat a wonderful softwear product to help make us look like we know what we are doing. I like design B the most. It is more open.
Lorita
12 years agoI like all 3 of the designs! Design “A” would be the one I would use as the “go to design”. It would look nice as a border on linens as well as collar or neckline treatment.

Barb Vine

12 years agoI like B because it is airy and so…beautiful. I have done your designs before and are easy to work with and looks great.
LeAnne L
12 years agoThat’s a tough one, but I’d have to choose A as my favorite.

12 years agoEileen:
I really like them all, but I think that A would be the easiest to use in a continued row for match up. I have the hardest time of all with the positioning. It always takes me the longest. I love embroidering I just wish I could have the confidence and ability that you have. I could see why this computer system would be the
greatest.

12 years agoI’m always drawn to the Jacobean shapes and especially the colors. These are very pretty in the blue and green but my favorite is B.
Linda Dawson
12 years agoI love design B. I would use it on both garments and handbags.
Sheila Hawkins
12 years agoI think they are all beautiful but I like A the best. It looks a little simplier and I am very new at machine embriodery. A placement guide would be a very welcome addition to my sewing room.
Iole Blaine-McGill
12 years agoThey are all beautiful, however A is preferable. The elements are more visible and more useful to me. I certainly thank you for the opportunity you are offering. B and C are also wonderful and can be used in their own manner.
Evelyn Gonzalez
12 years agoI love Design “B.” The complexity of the swirled vine, lovely flowers and leaves, as well as my two favorite colors in the world, green and blue, already have my mind racing to imagine what garments or home design patterns I’ll use this lovely design on.
Thank you so much for your wonderful blog! I never knew anything about embroidery and my brand new embroidery sewing machine sat on the table for more than (unbelievably) 2 years – until I discovered this blog.
L Freeman
12 years agoAll the designs are great, but I like B the best.
Pam Littlefield
12 years agoI love design A…
Elegant without being over crowded.
Eileen
12 years agoI like design C. Its very reminiscent of William Morris’s work.

12 years agoI like them all, but the A (first) one is so light and airy that crystals could be added for extra bling!
Debbie Weiss
12 years agoThey are all beautiful, but I especially love Design A. I’m re-doing my bedroom and these are my new colors and the design would look perfect on my duvet cover. Thank you for a chance to win.
Heather
12 years agoI love design A it has a light airy spring feel to it. I’m sure the others on the right project would look wonderful though.
LenaW

Mouse
12 years agoHi, I love them all, but I like design A the best. it is light and airy.
Ilene
12 years agoI really like design C the best – I think it is the happiest design and seems to be a very cohesive pattern. The design reminds me of the profusion of Spring flowers ready to explode in gardens! Gosh, I’m ready for Spring and it can’t come soon enough here in CT!
Dionne E Pray
12 years agoI like B the best although all are pretty. B reminds me of fanning myself on a hot day. I live in Texas, always hot here! Think fans on a collar…. love it!
Linda Crane
12 years agoI like B design the best, although they are all beautiful! I tend to prefer flowery designs.

12 years agoThere are certainly numerous details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I supply the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly you’ll find questions like the one you bring up exactly where essentially the most vital factor are going to be working in honest fine faith. I don?t know if preferred practices have emerged around items like that, but I’m positive that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Both boys and girls really feel the impact of just a moment’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.

12 years agoI love all 3 but my favorite is A. I have a Silhouette and could add some crystals using my Artistic software to the design since it is more open.
Thank you for the opportunity.
Bea Pinson
12 years agoA would be the one I’d choose first. All 3 offer great machine embroidery products. The placement tutorial is great!
Monica
12 years agoGive me an A. This would be a perfect border, done in metalics on a black lounge length tunic. Can I copy it>
Diana Ingle
12 years agoLove them all, but B jumped off the page at me. Of course, just when I thought the decision was made, A suddenly pulled me in that direction. It was a really tough choice, but B, having more of a focal point, finally won out.
Delores
12 years agoB because it balances heavy and light
Joy
12 years agoIB is my favorite. Actually they are all very nice
Melissa Mouser
12 years agoMy favorite design is C! I love the fullness of the design and the way it comes together.
Cyndi Scrivner
12 years agoWell, I really love them all for different reasons, but I have to choose Design B because my son, who works at a Plant Nursery, just brought home a plant last week that has similar long skinny leaves on it, that close up when touched, so it reminded me of it. Very delicate design, yet the large blue flowers show strength to me, I love it!
Eliset
12 years agoHi Eileen, these are just beautiful, but I think I like the swirls of number1. I’m a newbie to embroidery and could sure use help with placement. Thank you and love all the tips you and Nancy share with us

11 years agoDesign A is my choice. Placement is my biggest challenge when embroidering garments so sure could use some help
Doris Logan
11 years agoI like design C the best. I tend to like more solid patterns as they really draw your eye to them.
Patty Drake
11 years agoI like Design C the best. For some reason my eye is more drawn to that one. Thank you for the chance to enter to win the Perfect Placement Software!!
Fammie Peter
11 years agoI like design A the best although C is a close second.
Stefani Pollock
11 years agoI would hands down select option C. It is a more current to the times design than the other two options and more versatile in my opinion.
Cindy Leazer
11 years agoAll three designs are beautiful, but I believe I will have to vote for design C. It just seems to have that extra little pizzas that makes it just so special to put along the edge of a placemat, table scarf etc….
Claret
11 years agoI like Design B the best. There are a minimum of kinds of stitches and it does not have a lot of satin stitches. Satin stitches are pretty but depending on what type of fabric you are using, it is not conducive to all types of fabrics. Would really love the program.
Lou Bush
11 years agoI think I like C the best, but all three are really pretty and on any given day my “mood” determines what tickles my fancy!
Carolyn Dillinger
11 years agoAll of the designs are so pretty but if I have to chose one, I would chose Design B.

11 years agoI love design A. I know I’m late entering but hope I still have chance to win. I really need this placement software as I usually miss my center. Thanks for the opportunity to win .

10 years agoHey I know this is off topic but I was wondering if you knew of any widgets I could add to my blog that automatically tweet my newest twitter updates. I’ve been looking for a plug-in like this for quite some time and was hoping maybe you would have some experience with something like this. Please let me know if you run into anything. I truly enjoy reading your blog and I look forward to your new updates.

10 years agoAw, this was a definitely nice post. In concept I would like to put in writing like this in addition – taking time and actual effort to make a really beneficial article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and by no indicates appear to get some thing completed.
Julie Daugherty
10 years agoI like Design A as it is a little lighter in design.
