Put a Neckline on a Hemline!

Eileen's Machine Embroidery Blog

Uh? Put a neckline on a hemline? Well, kinda. I’ve been looking at the peek-a-boo transformation on Designer Necklines and wondered if I could use it to decorate something other than a neckline. After an aha! moment, I decided to try it on the hem of a sweatshirt. Look how easy it is.

First, remove the ribbing at the hem. Mark the side seam with a pin (if there isn’t a seam, just find the side of the shirt on both sides).

Eileen's Machine Embroidery Blog

Hoop tear-away stabilizer. Stitch the peek-a-boo neckline from Designer Necklines on the stabilizer. Remove the hoop from the machine and draw a straight line at the bottom of the curved stitched neckline.

Eileen's Machine Embroidery Blog

Spray the stabilizer with temporary adhesive. Turn the shirt inside out and place the hem edge on the straight line, matching the side seam to the short horizontal stitched line.

Eileen's Machine Embroidery Blog

Reattach the hoop to the machine. Slip the bulk of the shirt over the head of the machine and tape the shirt to the top of the machine. Love that!

Eileen's Machine Embroidery Blog

Stitch the decorative element.

Eileen's Machine Embroidery Blog

Place a piece of facing fabric (knit, woven or interfacing), right side down over the embroidery. Stitch the final color, the peek-a-boo transformation.

Eileen's Machine Embroidery Blog

Remove the hoop and carefully tear the sweatshirt away from the stabilizer. Cut the shirt between the V. Cut right up to the point of the V but do not snip the threads.

Eileen's Machine Embroidery Blog

Sew about 1” from the hem.

Eileen's Machine Embroidery Blog

Turn the facing to the inside and pin along the seam. Edgestitch.  Repeat for the other side seam, then hem the rest of the shirt. Add the same design to the neckline as instructed on the Designer Neckline DVD. Voila! A refashioned hemline!

  • Dell

I finished and mailed embroidered Halloween totes to my granddaughters.

  • Linda Conner

I just finished making a bear for a friend who lost her husband a year ago this month

  • Kay

Just finished Halloween bags for five grandchildren. I’m starting on Christmas towels now.

  • Jenn Wilson

I have 2 quilt tops to finish quilting, a potholder to make for the potholder exchange on Sewing District, 2 pillowcase dresses to make for my grandbaby, and a giant flower pillow from the Amy Butler pattern for Christmas. Plus I’m still looking at patterns in my books to embroider some items for Christmas. I’m new to embroidery – just got my first machine a few months ago so I have ALOT to learn! But I’m lovin’ it all!

  • Lori W

I am working on quilted Halloween post cards. Next is Christmas! I’m thinking a table runner, holiday towels, pajama bottoms and anything else I usually think of at the last minute…of course!

  • MarciaW

Christmas projects: finished two dolly quilts for grandnieces. In progress: made all the flowers for necklaces for grandnieces, now need to assemble. To Do: have the “stuff” and need to make a doll pillow for another grandniece. If can get all this accomplished, each grandniece will have one handmade gift.

I’m getting ready to start my holiday projects at sewing retreat this week. I’m hoping to complete the stipple sea shell quilt for my friend with five days of power sewing. I made my neighbor girls AG doll beds with complete bedding ensembles – embroidered sheets, pillow cases and minature quilts. I’m not sure what else I’ll get done before the holidays, but anything can happen.

  • Judy Wentz

Plan to make FSL ornaments for our daughters, grandchildren, and great granddaughters, but that is all I’ve done. I do have the patterns; just not the time to stitch them out yet.

  • Jane Anderson

I am putting the binding on a quilt for my travel trailer. I have been stitching small “desk” quilts for Christmas gifts. Using chalkboard fabric for some greatgrands’ gifts. Then some small gifties for stitching friends.

I haven’t even started stitching, but I have started organizing what I want to make. There is never enough time to make it all and every year I say I will start right after Christmas and here it is another year and nothing started yet. When will I learn???

  • Berenice

Great idea, provides a bit more space for consuming an extra Christmas cookie or two…

Am on #59 of 150 FSL crosses I am making for daughters’ service organization. Then on to 14 dress bags, formal length. Hope to squeeze in a few real gifts before Christmas!

  • Mary

I’m working on Scrubbies for our daughter and have given several away as Thank you gifts, also a quilt for our granddaughter “Newton all Year Long”, a quillo for her sister, (John Deere) and hopefully some ornaments for our tree. So many more but that will have to be for the New Year.

  • gayle hill

I am making little gift bags for all my family with a Christmas redwork design and the persons name and 2012 year. I have used up a lot of my Christmas prints and I am putting the design on a plain colour and stitching onto the front of the bag.. I love them all.

  • Lois

I am working on patchwork stockings and embroidering names for friends and family members. I would love to try the jingle bell stipple.

  • Bonnie Gray

I’m still in the planning and gathering stages. Thinking of ideas and gathering all the materials I need so I can just embroider and sew like crazy!
Love the neckline as a hem, great way to really get a lot of use out of a design!

  • Jean Boothe

I have started Christmas sewing a few weeks ago. I have made table runners, pajamas, purses, a tote bag, some in the hoop bags, fsl ornaments, bookmarks, ebook covers, cheerleading hair pieces and
I’m still sewing. I want to be done by thanksgiving hopefully.

  • Shirley R

I have just finished some Christmas stockings, some tea towels with an African wildlife design and border, and am starting some table runners with the same pattern but different fabrics.

  • Mary Haggenmaker

I am in the process of restocking my embroidered kitchen towels and making some free standing lace ornaments that I sell at craft fairs. There was also a cute owl pattern for a potholder that I am going to also attempt. Got the insulating batting and ready to go.

  • Betty

What a great idea! I have been wanting to do this on some of my sweatshirts, and I already have the Designer Neckline software. Can’t wait to try this. I’m trying to get started on my Christmas embroidery projects now. The Jingle Bell Stipple looks great, would love it.

  • Diane Cockman

I’ve started a Christmas tree for the front door, from JP’s. Will do several and give as presents(before Christmas). Then have a tablecloth to do for my daughter.

  • Joan D

I have been embroidering towels for both the kitchen and the bathroom, and making table runners, placemats and napkins, along with wine bottle carriers for hostess gifts.

  • Wendy

I just spent two days at the Stitchin Sisters conference with my mom and since she decided to give me an early Christmas and birthday present for the next 8 years or more with a Quattro 2 I decided to get going. I have already finished 2 sets of towels for a wedding gifts, made a new Halloween outfit for my daughter and looked through my stash of stuff to make my Christmas gift list. The list includes purses for my girlfrinds, eye glass cases for the kids teachers, a cool jacket for my sister-in-law and a new embroidered Christmas tree skirt for my sister and my mom. Big plans and a little overwheliming but one thing per day and one day at a time and I will get it done by Dec 22! Three days to spare will be awesome and maybe I will make something for me:)

Hi Wendy! Great meeting you in Charlotte! And congrats on your new Quattro – sure sounds like it was money worth spent. Have a blast with that machine – sounds like you’re off to a terrific start!

  • Pam

Wonderful idea. Would look great in white on a red shirt for Christmas!

  • Enis

Well, I’ve got a quilt almost finished for my new grandbaby — top done and quilt sandwich put together. Just need to do the quilting and binding. I’ve purchased the fabric to make two more quilts of the other two grands which will get started as soon as I finish the baby quilt. Plan to make sets of embroidered napkins and hand towels for all my sisters and sister-in-laws. Got the napkins and towels purchased. Yeah, I’m gonna be busy!

  • Kris Jacobson

I am working on owl potholders for the nieces and nephews. Thinking about embroidering some towels for others.

  • Kate Petrosky

I’m starting on an Anita Goodesign project, Sunbonnet Christmas. They’re designed as appliques, but I’m makiing them into free-standing ornaments.

  • patty sack

I am embroidering napkins, placemats and matching aprons!

  • Lorel Maple

After finally locating lining fabric printed with tubes of pink and red and fuchia lipsticks, I am embroidering makeup bags for my girlfriends that say “My Lipstick is Pinker (or Redder) Than Your Lipstick” with a bright, embroidered kiss print on one side and their name on the other. Inside will contain the special hand lotion they always look forward to.

  • Betsy

I made lap quilts for 2 daughters-in-law and am still in the planning stages of quilts for my sons. Quilts for men just seem so much harder to design.

  • SewLindaAnn

Nothing like October almost ending and not a thing done! I’ve got so many ideas, I’m going to write them all down and dedicate some time. I want to make personalized pouches for gifts., but I’d love to try quilt squares with embroidery for myself for a small lap quilt.

  • Donna F

I have not started my holiday sewing yet. I did complete a table runner at a recent embroidery retreat and would like to make one for my daughter in holiday fabrics. I have sweatshirts and two jackets to embellish for family members as well. I think that your jingle bell set would make so lovely holiday banners so I would love to win it!

  • Donna F

yikes! Such lovely holdiay banners is what I meant to say.

  • sharon

We are expecting a new GD any day now and I have been sewing up a pink storm. so far: 6 baby quilts, 18 receiving blankets, 28 burp cloths, many bibs, gowns, swaddling cloths…… I tend to get carried away, but this hobby is so much fun!!

  • Chris

Let me begin with thanking the Stitching Sisters for two great days of fun learning. I have a Brother 6000 Quatro and learned so much. It was like a new machine again. I am doing all the designs we did in the seminar. They were great and will make so many Christmas gifts. I espescially love the “Ladybug”. these were two days very well spent. Thanks Sisiters.

  • Susan Burns

Yes I have begun Christmas presents. I have made some purses and totes using your in the hoop patterns, and have also made some dish towels and added embroidered lace to some scarfs for gifts.

  • Beth R

Yes, I’ve stitched some decorations and doilies that I plan to give as gifts. But more to do!!!

  • Doreen

No, I haven’t started yet but need to figure out what to make for everyone very quickly from the supplies that I have because I will have no funds to purchase anything else.

  • LeAnne L

I haven’t started yet. Haven’t had time to even think about it. It’s going to be another mad dash again this year trying to get everything done.

  • Karen Poole

This year I have cut back quite a bit on my sewing list (as other obligations have come up this year), I already have gifts made for all of my sisters and my sister in law (don’t want to say what they are in case one might read this). I am making a table runner for my step daughter for her Christmas table, I am making a yo-yo Christmas tree for one of my sons and I am going to make a “cat” pillow for another one of my son’s (this kitty recently passed away and he was devestated so I wanted to make something he will remember him by). I got the idea from a craft mag. and you print a photo of the animal onto printer fabric, applique it to the pillow fabric, cut the pillow fabric to the shape of the photo and then sew.

  • Vicky Isliefson

I have purchased and prewashed a piece of linen to make a bread cloth for my sister-in-law. Have not yet decided what to embroider on it. She doesn’t want a holiday theme, and prefers something neutral, both in theme and color.

  • Veronica Harper

I am way behind on my home made Christmas presents because I have been taking softwear classes for my 5D Embroidery softwear to learn about digitizing my own embroidery patterns.
I have everything lined up for my projects so I had better get busy with them. I would love to win the Christmas Stippling paterns.
    Thank you.

I have a purse made and need to make a table runner. If I have time would like to make some dresses for girls and doll clothes. But sewing room is need of cleaning up and house. Also want to make 10-20 different candies and 20 different baked goods.

  • Gail Beam

Love this creative way to use a neckline design!

  • Margie

I’ve been making potholders from old jeans using insul-bright between the layers and a cotton fabric on the back. I use my decorative stitches from the machine to further enhance my embroidery design before and/or after stitching the 3 layers together. For example I embroidered Koi on some blue denim and used green denim for boarders then used my machines decorative stitches to add seaweed and bubbles around the Koi. Pretty inexpensive gift plus a small project like hot pads lets me try alot of different techniques.

Also making mittens from felted wool sweaters. Embroidering a small design or monogram on the top of each mitten.

  • Pat Fritze

The design you used for the hem treatment is not in the neckline CD. Did you stitch with sewing machine and then do the v neckline?

Hello Pat, I added the vine design to the Designer Neckline peek-a-boo transformation design. The vine is from Anitagoodesign, collection and product number unknown. You can add any design to any of the Designer Neckline transformations. It’s fun and the possibilities are endless!

  • judit z

Now this is really a winner to use one design in multiple ways ….

Do you have some for childrens clothing size. Got 4 yrs old and 15month girls want to make them some jackets for the winter this idea would be great for the tops. Juditz
