Applique: It’s All About the Fabric!

Applique embroidery designs are fun to make with these Micro Print fabrics.  This fun collection offers 100% combed cotton fabrics in five color ways of micro dots and coordinating buffalo plaids.  It is perfect for these small applique embroidery designs.

When using the micro print fabrics for the applique embroidery designs, it is suggested to use a coordinating embroidery thread to match the applique fabric.  So, there is a Micro Prints Companion Thread Quartet to match the Micro Print fabrics.  Matching the thread to the background fabric is another option, depending on the look you want.  Try them out to see what you prefer for your project.

Let’s discuss how to keep your appliques wrinkle-free.  First, press your fabrics well.  Second, use Exquisite FuseMe Fusible Web.  It is a low melt paper-backed fusible web for bonding two fabrics together.  This works great for applique embroidery designs.  Apply fusible web to the back of your applique fabric following manufacturer’s directions.  You can even press your applique fabric right in the hoop!

Another tip that is helpful with applique is knowing when to trim your fabric in the hoop or precutting.  How do you know?  It is as simple as knowing what type of tackdown the embroidery design has.  If it is a run stitch tackdown, then it is best to trim the fabric in the hoop.  If it is a zigzag stitch tackdown, then you can precut your applique fabric with a digital cutter or printing a template.

Listen in as Eileen Roche shares how to know whether to trim in the hoop or precut your applique fabric.  It all depends on the type of tackdown.
