A visit with THE Dream Machine

I was telling my friend about my work day. “I watched online videos of THE Dream Machine Innov-is XV8500D from Brother. My conclusion: The machine is a dream!”

We both agreed it would be a good idea to see THE Dream Machine in person. I made an appointment to visit our friends, Carla Plant and Shannon Atmore from Arlington Sewing Machines, for a hands-on demo.

I only planned on staying for an hour but the machine was so much fun I just about closed the store!

Here are some of my favorite highlights from THE Dream Machine.

    1. Massive screen!   I read about the 10.1” LCD screen and also saw videos but until you’ve sat down in front of the machine you can’t fully appreciate it. It’s huge!

    1. Crisp & Clear!   I didn’t expect to notice or appreciate any changes when viewing the LCD screen. My eyes aren’t that sophisticated. But that was absolutely the first thing that caught my attention. The colors and images are incredibly crisp and clear. When you view the built-in embroidery designs you can see them clearly on the large LCD screen. Or if you’re like me and load 5 similar versions of the same design and wonder which one is the right one—now there’s no doubt. We have certainly come a long way since the days of small monochrome LCD screens!

    1. Live view!   THE Dream Machine features the InnovEye® 2 Technology. This means you can see a live view of the needle area on your screen. What does this mean? Imagine scanning your hooped garment then viewing the actual garment on screen. Then select and position embroidery designs on the garment. Now the project you envision is easier to create!

  1. Scan!   Scan a drawing on the scanning frame and turn it into embroidery! Or load clip art from a USB stick and convert it to stitches! All of this can be done at the embroidery machine. It’s no longer a clunky process of sitting at your desktop computer with a scanner, then loading the image into embroidery software to convert the image to a design and then walking over to your embroidery machine to load the design. Whew! I’m tired just thinking and writing a run-on sentence about it!  Now the process is streamlined – it’s all done at your embroidery machine!

  2. Massive Hoop!   The maximum embroidery area is 9.5” x 14”. Imagine all the time and grief you can save by not having to rehoop.

  3. Disney!   Whether you’re stitching for a kid or a kid at heart—the library of Disney designs is very extensive.

I was also impressed with the size of the designs.

    Check out this princess design!

Carla and Shannon loaded the Minnie Mouse design.

The design is 12.63” tall. That’s one big mouse!

  4. I’ve seen the light!   Oftentimes I lower the needle to double check the alignment of my design before I take the first stitch. But now I can use the Droplight™ LED Embroidery Positioning Marker to check alignment on THE Dream Machine.

  5. Never get confused about thread colors again!   Sure, there’s a numbered thread color sequence we can all follow but more often than not, I still manage to get confused on which thread to load next. THE Dream Machine has the INNOVACHROME™ LED Thread Color and Monitoring System. It indicates the thread color I need to install next. The flower image on screen indicates it’s time to stitch the pink portion of the flower.

The light on the machine shows the same pink color! Wow!

  6. Details, details! Engineers noticed the details!   It’s easy to love all the obvious technological advances in THE Dream Machine. But I also appreciate and enjoy discovering where improvements have been made. Sure they may be subtle but they mean a lot!
    • Skid proof foot pedal.   I’ve heard some people remove their shoes because their foot slips off the pedal. THE Dream Machine has a very comfy, skid proof foot pedal!

    • New Stability Plus™ Frame.   The 9 ½” x 14” frame has aluminum, rubber and ribbed corners. Here’s a close-up view of the rubber on the side of the hoop. The addition of the rubber secures the fabric and helps prevent slippage.

    • Improved Storage for Feet!   I had to do a double take when Carla held the foot storage container upside down. The feet don’t fall out!

    • Keep track of the day and time!   For those of us who get so engrossed in our sewing and embroidery projects, this feature is handy! Now we won’t forget to stop and eat or visit the husband and children! There is a handy display of the day and time on the machine.

These were just a few of my favorite features! I encourage you to stop by your local Brother dealer for a test drive. Even if you don’t think you’re in the market for a machine it’s still good to see the available features. This way when you are ready you will be better able to make an informed decision.  If you want to learn more about the machine, visit the Designs Plus Newsletter for February!  There’s also a special coupon for

Special thank you to Carla Plant and Shannon Atmore at Arlington Sewing Machine for giving me a tour of the machine!

  • Dee

so hard to pick one since it is a dream machine! Excuse me ……had to wipe the drool :). So I think the ability to load or scan a drawing in and turn it into a design on the screen just seems so unreal. What a time saver. Love all these features Thank you for the review

    • Shirley T

I have worn the button out on prior machines, cutting thread. Now its an extra foot pedal! Love it!

    • Bill Nicholson

I love that the machine is electric. No more pumping the pedal like my grandmother had to do. Thank you.

  • Valerie Jennings

    Hoop size.

  • Marge Burkheiser

Where do I start? LOVE LOVE the Dream Machine. Would have to say the addition of the scanning/auto dig is totally awesome and to die for!

  • Carma Slama

The scan and stitch capability is my favorite! That is amazing!

  • Donna Fecteau

It just looks like an awesome machine. But I think the scan feature would be my favorite and second place would be the color indicator for the thread!

  • Janet Uyeno

hoop size and the laser pointer

  • beth daniels

I like the scan feature and that you can digitize designs on the dream machine. It saves a lot of time.

  • Denise

oh I have to pick 2 ! The skid free pedal and the scan feature! Looks like so much 🙂 this is definitely going on my wish list for now 🙂

  • JudiC

Oh my O my I sew want this dream machine! No doubt the best feature is the scan & convert with no software or computer needed :o)

  • Colleen Bell

Oh! All so wonderful! But to be honest – a bigger hoop – oo la la! Anything for less hoopings!

  • Leora B

my favorite would be the live camera view ,and scan feature. that way I would know where to start on my fabric or object that is being embroidered.

  • Heidi Halvorson

    hoop size! WOW!!!

  • Rhonda

I really love the Dream Machine my favorite embroidery feature is the laser guide.

  • Carol Adams

The feature I liked very much was that the feet do not fall out of the holder – if I just bump mine a little, they are all over the place.

  • Marianne myrick

I love the laser light, the scan frame, and the giant hoop – it was too hard to pick just one.

  • Erich Campbell

I’d have to go with hoop size, though I’m still clamoring for the big hoops on the commercial machines. That said, I’m amazed what they are doing in the home market these days!

  • Doris Van Peeren

Love the design positioning feature. I’m forever changing designs to fit small areas and would love this feature. Believe Brother to be the best machine today.

  • Paula Blankenheim

    Love the laser guide!

  • Marilyn Knuth

whats not to love about the Dream machine? I love the brightly lit , generous workspace.

  • Michelle H

Wow! Dream Machine certainly sums this beauty up! HUGE FRAME!! 🙂

  • Maureen Angers

Have played with this machine and I love the massive amount of built in designs.

  • Kathryn

Would love a machine that could do all of this!

  • Sue Anderson

I love the scanning and digitizing features.

  • lisa newell

I absolutely love my Dream Machine and I what I love most about it is the creative options I have with the scanner.

  • Renee Bell

To pick ONE feature, would be the Stability Plus Frame! Also LOVE the Drop Light feature. 🙂 Love this machine 🙂

  • Monica D

    I want it!!! 🙂

  • Merron Kay Skramstad

The Stability Plus frame would be my number one feature that I love. Also love the scan feature and the huge screen! Hard to pick just one feature!

  • Danae

That hoop, it’s so FLUUUUUUFFFYYYYYY! (in my best Agnes voice)

  • Karen McDonner

I attended a Sit N Sew at our local sewing store and wow the Dream Machine was wonderful. All attendees had the opportunity to use this new Brother and boy did I fall in love with this machine. The super hoop was fabulous and my favorite feature!

  • Susan Secore

I think I am most excited about the scan and embroider feature. I would love to digitize my own designs this machine would definitely be a dream come true.

  • Julie Barkley

I think the scan feature would be so fun to play with. It would let my creativity soar!

  • Michele in Illinois

I love how you can program on the machine and the new Disny designs.
There is a baby bottle full of different pastel colors of Mickey Mouse
heads/logos. I want the machine just for that design. haha

  • Carol

I love the fact that you can scan and do pictures to embroidery right on the machine! Also the positioning marker seems to be the “icing on the cake”. Whoever designed this machine spoke with people who embroider; the features reflect that.

  • Carrie Cunningham

My favorite feature of the Dream Machine is the Thread Color and Monitoring System. How nice to be reminded of the NE the thread color to use!

  • Cora Willis-King

ZLove the Droplight™ LED Embroidery Positioning Marker to check alignment, That would make applique a breeze!

  • Karla Bannerman

Silly as it may seem, the clock on the screen would be my favorite feature. All are wonderful, but having the time in front of me would be fantastic.

  • Anne Marie Reilly

Wow, the laser LED Positioning marker is great! So is the skid proof pedal. I’d love to have those features.

  • Bev C

Definitely the bigger hoop size, it is massive. I have a Brother machine and would be so happy to replace it with this one.

    Happy days.

  • Beverly Belaska

I have a quattro but would love to upgrade.

  • Sherida Burch

I love the larger hoop size. whose kidding I love everything about it.

  • Susan Kelly

    Love the large hoop!

  • zinobia

I always have craved for a big hoop to avoid multi hooping.

secondly, with water soluble stabiliser being expensive and not available easily here I use net to embroider FSL items where net slips and spoils the design. So a non slip feature of hoop are just what I was always wishing somebody would think and innovate.

Third thing which I would love to give a thumbs up is ability to scan abilly to digitise at machine level and embroider. Is it just a basic digitising option or full fledge digitizer that can suffice all digitising needs.

Also can you resize a design? If yes does it take care of density, stitch length etc too?

Lots of more questions in mind. Will need to check all the features on brother’s website to add more likes if they are taken care of.

  • Kathy

I love the scan feature. This is great to take kids artwork and to be able to stitch it. Great machine

  • Gladys Stanley

Okay so 2 years ago I me a Innovois ve2200 wonderful machine love it but then guess what next year they come out with this one, bummer should of waited, but I love my machine so I will have to have lots of good things for trade in so right now I am still falling in love with mine, so enjoy your new baby

  • Jennifer Berry

i am most excited about the scan to design feature! I want one for sew many reasons!

  • Beth R

I love the droplight feature! Great for knowing exactly where the needle will hit!

  • Pamela Snider

I absolutely love this machine, but my very favorite feature is it’s ability to take a scanned image and turn it into embroidery. The sky is the limit with The Dream Machine!!!!

  • lynda case

I have the dream machine and love it. I use it almost every day and just don’t have time to do all that I want to do. Can’t really name a favorite thing unless it is the large hoops.

  • Bonnie Gray

They have really put a lot into this machine! I like the droplight, the huge hoop and the scan to embroidery feature. Will have to go to a dealer and check this out!

  • Rita

Would love to get the bigger hoop. Looks to be a great embroidery machine.

  • Carol K.

The scan and stitch sounds really great as does the centering light! SOOOOOOOOOOOO COOOOOOOOOOOOl!

  • art

    Looks great!

  • Pam

    The scanning. AMAZING,

  • Sandy D

I would definitely love to turn a picture into embroidery by scanning it in. Awesome!

  • Tiffany

    I love the stippling feature!

  • Sandra

I love how very large the built in designs are, a lovely machine that I am drooling over!

  • Vicky Isliefson

My favourite feature is the Droplight. I am tired of guessing at the shadows of the embroidery foot!

An awesome machine! If I could choose only one thing as my favorite, it would be the droplight. I love everything about the Dream Machine. I can see me using the drop light on everything I embroider.

  • Karen Moore

I think the easy that you can align where to sew your design, has to be the greatest.

  • Shirley Clark

I love the big screen and that huge hoop! It would be great for embroidering pillow covers.

  • S Hanson

    The needle drop light!

  • Christine Anne Simpson

What a dream machine, I think I’d like …… all the features best, too hard to choose just one!

  • Michelle H

I think the laser to help you align embroidery is awesome. I always worry about getting designs just where I want it

  • Kit

The needle drop light! And the huge hoop. It is quite the “DREAM MACHINE”

  • Ellen

the hoop and lazer light are my favorites. Wish I had it in the budget for a new machine.

  • Barbara McKenzie

My favorite feature, which is not exclusive to the Dream Machine, is the InnovEye. I have had a chance to play with it on another machine and can see a myriad of ways it could be useful! My not so favorite feature (which will prevent me from ever owning one) is the price!!

  • Jean R

I love the camera and the laser pointer.

  • Pam Morrow

Live camera view – no contest!

  • Maga

The hoop size, the screen and the LED pen. Would love one but am very, very happy with my VQ2 and V3 Innovis machines. Brother machines makes it a pleasure to sew every time.

  • Ellie Stratton

Truly, it is a dream machine with ample of features. Such difficult tasks handled in easy ways and perform so systematic. Thanks for sharing this new update with us. 🙂

  • Denyse Rose

LED pen, and hoop size. Love my DREAM machine!

  • Rosa Smith

Man I want one, so many great features but expecially love the fact that it shows you the color of the thread, I actually love all the features but that stood out for me.

  • Terri

The machine has many awesome features, but the scanner really has me intrigued.

  • Kim

As others have said it is hard to pick one. I like the laser dot for the needle position. Or maybe it is the rubber on the side of the hoops.

  • Jan Dick

How can you choose just one favorite feature?! I am very fortunate to own a Dream Machine. I sat down last Sunday morning for the first time in front of my machine. Keep in mind that I have NEVER embroidered anything – ever. I have no experience. So, I would have to say that my favorite feature is how user friendly the machine is. There are built-in tutorials, visual aids, visual “stops” so you don’t make a mistake and put out an eye or break your machine, and step by step walk through assistance as you go. I successfully embroidered Mickey Mouse from beginning to end with no struggles at all! LOVE LOVE LOVE my machine.

  • Diane Cockman

Laser pointer and then everything else. Beautiful machine.

  • Judy Vanarnam

Hoop size, laser and a huge screen are some of my favorites!

  • Diane Bowman

Definitely the large hoop! Who doesn’t love more space for embroidery

  • Cathy

Ability to scan a drawing and have the machine “digitize”. WOW!

  • Susan Tinnerello

I like to be super organized so the handy foot container is perfect.

  • Susan

Since my hands don’t work as well as they used to, I love the scan feature which allows you to do accurate stippling around applique designs.

  • Chrystina Power

WOW! I knew the Dream was awesome! Saving my money to buy one! Big Disny fan, in fact will be going to WDW this month!

  • Debora Kerr

That is an amazing machine! But sometimes, it’s the minor features that hook me. I love the foot storage!

  • Linda Ladd

Like everybody else, it is hard to choose just one! I love large designs so the larger hoops would win me over!!!

  • Deb

    The scanning frame, hands down!

  • Joanne Brice

I would especially love the Disney designs for my sweet grands and great grands.

  • Meghan M.

Wow, there are so many great features! It’s hard to pick just one, but the one that gets me most excited is the color coded light to tell you what thread to load next.

  • Brenda Melahn

Wow … wow … wow … definitely “built in” digitizing!!

  • Kristi D.

Love the larger and easier to understand screen

  • Jessie Ramos

Omg! It’s so hard to choose just one feature that I like the most, everything is great about this machine, but I guess I will go with the Scan feature.

My favorite Tonight Show host is Jimmy Fallon!

  • Pearl Lucas

Dreaming to have this machine, love the scan feature

  • Anon1

Oh my! This is wonderful, so much to love. I would love to have that hoop size! It is making my sweet machine look puny.

  • Patty

My favorite feature is you can mark with chalk or an erasable marker on your fabric, scan it to the machine and then align all of your embroider with your marks! Fabulous!

  • LuLu

The scanner to design feature definitely! What a timesaver. Even if I had to take out a second mortgage, this machine might well be worth it!

  • Saundra Romanus

It is definitely the large screen. So clear and crisp!

  • Pam McDonald

That is a beautiful machine. I have a friend who has one and I am envious! I love the large hooping and the large screen, so you can see the details. Digitizing is tops as well 🙂

  • Mary

The laser pointer is the best!

  • Barb Grant

Gosh! What’s not to love! I love the screen, the laser, and the hoop. I can’t just pick one! Brother has thought of everything!

  • When they unveiled it, I was so excited about the Dream Machine that I had to have one. I’m in Heaven!
You did a great job highlighting some of the awesome features, Denise. We really enjoyed your visit.

    • Denise Holguin

Thank you, Carla, for making the story possible! Had a wonderful time at your store.

  • Deborah K.

I love the scan feature and the super big hoop!

  • Kim Heldman

I LOVE my dream machine!! My favorite feature is the scanning ability. And the screen is huge, and the laser, and the pen feature. There is so much to love!

  • Crissy Caldwell

i like the pin point needle laser guide! I think I use the wheel on my machine 20 times a day! That’s crazy.

  • Patricia Lines

Hoop size and scan features are impressive. I have had a demo and the on screen edit feature was GREAT.

  • Shelly Christensen

I would love the droplight alignment feature, I am always holding my breath when it comes to alignment but all the features are so cool, I would love this machine!!! I wish I didn’t need a new car so badly or I liked walking more. LOL

  • allen king

Ilike the INNOVACHROME™ LED Thread Color and Monitoring System feature that tells you exactly where and which color will sew next. Wish my current machine could do that!

  • Colleen

    I love the hoop size!

  • Royce Zook

Takes a lot of the thrill away from owning a multi-needle. So many leading edge features!

  • Doreen

I love everything. If I can only pick one I’d say the larger hoop.

  • Joan Shriver

Who wouldn’t love a bigger hoop? Love the Disney designs, also.

  • Audrey Goodwin

I’ve done a good job most of my life to not covet my neighbors sewing machine, but this Dream Machine is sensory overload. The hoop size in conjunction with the screen size makes this disabled newbie quilter think she can conquer the world again. I thought I had forgotten how to dream or at least given up on dreaming, then ” the Dream Machine” comes along. You can bet I’m going to enter every contest from now on to get a shot at this beauty.

  • Judy Fletcher

This may seem simple; however, I’ve been piecing a lot lately and I love how easily I can sew a straight seam. In addition to all the other great things my Dream Machine can do, it’s great that it just sews so well.

  • Chris Sugden

My favourite feature on THE Dream Machine is the Droplight™ LED Embroidery Positioning Marker to check alignment. Fantastic feature!

  • Debe

    The laser light.

  • Susan Wilson

I am very impressed with the Dream Machine, and I really like the Scan feature. Just think of the possibilities!! Thanks for the info about the new Brother Dream Machine 🙂

  • Gail Beam

Dream machine plus! Who could pick just one special feature! They are all mouth watering! Would love to have just one of the dream features on my machine!

  • Jackie

    The multi purpose LED light.

  • Jeanne Hoey

I attended a Stitching Sisters seminar in Dec ’14 in Fort Meyers, FL and had the opportunity to use the Dream Machine, and fell in love! In fact, I bought one that weekend!! My favorite thing about the machine just so far, if the screen. The fact it that is so large helps me to see how the design is going to look.

  • Leah Geary

Love almost all of the features, but think the large hoop is great. New to embroidery and still learning how to rehoop. Have an Innovis 1500d with the largest hoop of 6 x 10. Would be great to have a bigger hoop.

  • Deanna

It would be the large hoop!

  • Lorene Nelson

I have the Brothers Dream Creator XE innov-is VM5100. wish someone would show a video on how this machine works. am on oxygen 24/7 and is hard for me to get to the sewing machine place to get instructions for some of the things I want to do with this machine. Thanks

  • Edith

I just love everything about the Dream Machine, but if I have to pick one feature, it is the Laser Guide. My husband is very impressed with the machine as well. Right after I purchased it, I was embroidering one of the beautiful letters with the flowers and he came in and said ” I am not impressed very often, but I am really impressed with what this machine does.”

  • If your family enjoys camping, you can even extend your visit
over a weekend and set up tents along the way.
There are many different ways to enjoy the wonder of
a Disney holiday. Here, the Caves hotel multiplies your joy with amazing views.

  • Lorene Nelson

wish you would show some illustrations on the Dream Creator XE innov”is VM5100. show some of the ideas on how to work the large frame for embroidery thank you lorene

My favorite is the laser light . I also like the scanning to turninto embroidery. What is there not to like on this mahine. LOOOOOOOOOVE mine!!!!!

  • Pamela Lewis

I bought this machine a couple a months ago . left the country to travel ..before I left I did play a little in it . but what was happening ..when I embroidered , about 3,stitches in ..needle keeps breaking . what could be the problem ? About to return home and started thinking about it 🙁

    • Carla Plant

Pamela, There are different reasons for this to occur. Any machine can have this issue. It could be in the upper threading or a broken piece of thread in the top tension to name the most popular reasons. I suggest that you call the machine dealer that you purchased the Dream Machine from. They should try to help you solve the issue over the phone. You may end up having to take your machine in so that they can see and diagnose the problem. I’m thinking that it will be something simple.

Love love love my machine . What I like most is the laser light and self threading.

Magnificent goods from you, man. I have understand your stuff previous too and
you’re jujst too great. I actually like what you’ve acdquired
here, really like what you’re stating and the way inn whicdh you say it.
Youu make it enjoyable and you still take care of to kwep it smart.
I cant wait to read much more from you. This is really a
    terrific web site.

  • Arlene

Can someone direct me to a tutorial that shows you how to embroider a large design that is done by doing top part then bottom part of the design thus allowing you to embroider a very large design

    • Carla

Some designs that are sold are made to be embroidered in multiple hoopings. They will have a tutorial in pdf format on the design cd. If you have a design that you want to resize or that is larger than your machine’s maximum hoop size, it would have to be re-sized or split in digitizing software such as Perfect Embroidery Pro.

  • Glenn

Is the foot pedal completely slip proof? Sewing with shoes on is ok with it?

  • Carla Plant

The surface is has textured rubber on the top and can be used both with shoes and without shoes. It is wider then average for more stability. The bottom of it has big nice rubber grips. I have not heard the term “completely slip proof” used with a foot control before but this one is the closest that I’ve seen to it.

  • Bruce

I would love to have one. Great post! Thanks for sharing.

  • I check your blog every few days. It is very informative and you are obviously very knowledgeable in this area. Your points are well made. Who raised you? They deserve a medal for a job well done. This might be a weird thing to to say but, I like your write ups.

  • startup investor

Some nice points there. Spot on with this.

  • I love your write ups but, I do not read well. Do you have videos on the subject? Well written! awesome job on this article!

  • PHP Freelancer Script

Definitely believe that which you said. Your favorite justification appeared to be on the web the easiest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I definitely get irked while people consider worries that they plainly do not know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and also defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thanks

  • jstash
