Monogram of the Month
By Eileen Roche
EmbroideryArts.com’s Arabesque Monogram Set 9, candlewick font is elegant and timeless. Imagine it scrolled across the corner of a linen tablecloth, or centered on smooth finish cotton pillow shams. Regardless of where you place it, you’ll be making a statement of ownership.
When working with elegant monograms, experiment with thread colors because subtle changes in value can switch the accent from the letters to the ornamental details. I had fun playing with thread color on these samples.
Depending on the final use, I have learned that my personal preference is to use contrasting thread color for the larger elements – the wing-needle stitches (in the center area of the letter) or satin letter. I’ll keep that in mind when selecting the actual thread color. Most likely, the contrasting thread will coordinate with china for a dining room or wall color in
a bedroom.
Not only does color matter but so does thread weight so it’s important to follow the digitizer’s instructions or intent for best results. A delicate design such as this was digitized for 40 wt. thread. Changing the thread weight to a heavier 30 wt. can result in crowded stitches.
When I stitched the sample below, several thread breaks occurred during the stitching of the white color segment in this sample. The candlewick stitches are too dense for this 30 wt. thread. Although the final candlewick stitches look nice, notice how the travel stitches are not hidden by the gray letter. This is because the white 30 wt. thread is too heavy and pushes away from the digitizer’s original path. If you look closely, you’ll also notice the open centers of the wing-needle stitches are closed – the thread is too thick and completely fills this minute area.
This is a great example of how important (and fun) it is to test embroidery designs. Don’t look at testing as a waste of time, look at it as a learning experience. Every test, every stitch out, should increase your level of confidence and arm you with new information that you can apply to your next project.

11 years agoI usually use a single letter for monograms because I always forget the rules for which letters go where. I must have a mental block or Alzheimer’s
Karin
11 years agoI love the ways you can dress up a single letter – yours are lovely! My favorite is the blue & white one. Thanks for that tip about the thread weight – I often forget about that, and get the results you showed, and have to snip, snip, snip.
Diana kohle
11 years agoI prefer the 3 letter monogram
Karen Poole
11 years agoI prefer to use three letters when doing Monograms! I think you can make them look much more elegant that way!
annette Rady
11 years agoi just love the way 3 letter monograms look as an accent to towels, bags, etc. There is really something special about the ones that intertwine to form a”object d’art”. You really do forget that you are looking at alphabet letters.
Darlene
11 years agoI don’t have a favorite. I like all types of monograms. It just depends on the situation as to what I use. I love monograms. My favorite thing to do.
Erma
11 years agoI love monograms and the single letter is my favorite.
Jean Kocik
11 years agoAs I am new to monogramming, it is much easier to do a single letter.
Yesterday, I attempted a three letter monogram. It turned out pretty darn good I must say. I am trying to study anything I can and practice a lot. This should help my sales quite a bit because everyone is asking for things to be monogrammed. I would love to have the software.
Melanie Leigh
11 years agoDepends on what and for whom. I like them all!
Karen Blancher
11 years agoI usually only do one. I can never get more than one to look just right.
Sandy
11 years agoI love three-letter monograms, but single-letter ones are pretty high on my list, too. 😉
Judy
11 years agoI like the look of the 3 letter monogram, but usually take the safe road and do one. Courage to experiment is on my list for 2014.
Barbara Leatherman
11 years agoI love a one letter monogram.
Shirley Clark
11 years agoI mostly do three letter monograms for my granddaughter, but on things like napkins, I just do one letter.
I want to practice more doing those on woven fabric so they won’t pucker. That seems to be a problem no matter that stabilizer I use. Is there a trick to that I don’t know about?
Diane Cockman
11 years agoIt depends on what I’m monograming. If for a granddaughter usually one, as I make it fancy. For an adult, I use three.
Sherrie
11 years agoI do one letter monograms.
Rhonda Higgins
11 years agoI have been doing 3 letter monogram on mens shirts for awhile now and like the way they make business shirts look expensive and very professional. I’ve done them on collars, pockets, and
cuffs, and sometimes on the front placket. I also have done
them on ties.

11 years agoSingle letter in a frame is so elegant and timeless and my most complemented design.Happy New Year everyone!
Jan D
11 years agoI like 3 letter but for kids and casual things a fun single letter is pretty cute
JudiC
11 years agoI seemm to favor the single or double letter monogram. I can never get three to look quite right depending on the initials, of course.
Marti
11 years agoGet some good embroidery software……….It will line the letters up for you, and will always be beautiful and perfect!
Personally, I use Bernina Software. Easy to learn and to use. Good luck and Happy New year! mjc
mimi
11 years agoI like the 3 letter ones, with the center letter a bit larger
joyce
11 years agoI like a single letter sometimes framed with a oval or circle. Also my initials are JJ so it can get confusing to have more letters.
Terri Bradford
11 years agoI’ve never done a monogram. Yesterday I bought a new machine.
My previous machine (a used 4X4) was used to make things to sell
To get the bigger machine. I can’t wait to do one!
I am totally in love with embroidery!
Frances Powell
11 years agoMy favorite is 3 letter. I like to experiment with the placement of the letters. It seems like there is an endless amount of ways to place the letters, resulting in numerous styles of monograms.
Donna G.
11 years agoI love the look of three letter monograms but usually do a single letter. Single letters seem more compatible with the projects I do.
Joanne Roth
11 years agoGreat post. Loved the detail close-up photos of the stitching. Really good topic. I also bought this font this month and will try to post some photos soon – ill be sure to use the 40 wt thread though – thank you!
Joaniez
11 years agoI like single letter monograms, but I have done 3 letter monograms. I like the way the monograms looks so different by just changing the thread colors, I’ll have to try that. Thank you for your inspiration.
Sandra
11 years agoI enjoy single letter monograms because they are so elegant.
Casie Williams
11 years agoI do 3 letter monograms on gifts for couples. Otherwise, I use single letter.
Sandy
11 years agoIt depends on what I’m monograming. But I really love the elegance of the single monogram that you have shared with us.
Jan L
11 years agoTypically 3 letter monogram is the one I do the most. Recently I have been experimenting with 3 letter monograms using lower case for the first and middle initial and cap for the surname. For Christmas gifts, the men in my life received monogrammed ties in this “new” format.
Carolyn Goodworth
11 years agoI love monograms, and I use different types for different occasions. I love different threads. I even tried cotton quilting thread for a hand-stitched look. Monograms rock!!
Shirl R
11 years agoIt depends upon the occasion. I love this monogram. I like the white and off-white one the best, very sophisticated, I think.
Valerie Brown
11 years agoI favor single letter because I’m usually working on family items rather than those for an individual.
Where on the spool is a weight listed? Or am I supposed to just know what weight threads are?
Odette
11 years agoI have never tried monograms, but your article makes me want to try experimenting with it!
Celeste B
11 years agoI like using the 3 letter monogram. When I stitch purses (and sometimes clothing) I will add my monogram on the inside. I have two different ones stored in my machine and I just choose the style that suits whatever I am making.
LindaW
11 years agoDepending on the project, I like three-letter and one-letter monograms. In the right font, three letters–without any other embroidery–can be classic, elegant, bold, etc. One-letter fonts look great with a frame.
Darlene Gerber
11 years agoI prefer single monograms. I presented 3 sets of embroidered Towels as gifts this year. I also did a 3 letter monogram for a young couple for their wedding.
chris laub
11 years agoI prefer a three letter monogram with the surname capitalized in the center.
Rosalyn Schultze
11 years agoWhether I use a one-letter monogram or a three-letter monogram depends upon the size of the article I am embroidering. For napkins, handkerchiefs, bandanas, etc., I usually use a single letter. Towels, tablecloths, placemats, etc., are attractive with a three-letter monogram.
Brenda Melahn
11 years agoBeing a novice embroiderer, I would have to say a single letter monogram — less chance for error 😉
Nancy Weber
11 years agoI can’t say that I have a favorite style of monogram. I usually decide which style depending on what the project is. If I had to choose, I think it would be the traditional 3 letter monogram as I am a bit old-fashioned myself!
Betsy Milburn
11 years agoI love both single and 3 letter. Pocket t- shirts have been very popular in my area and I have stitched lots and lots of pockets with 3 letters. I love to give towels for wedding gifts and usually stitch only surname letter with some sort of motif. I think the towels make a wonderful gift that is remembered!
Ellen Perry
11 years agoI don’t believe I have ever done 1 letter. My wedding gifts are always 3 letters either on a towel or a kitchen towel
Love reading your blogs and I have learned oh so much over the years
Thank you

11 years ago AUTHORYou’re welcome, Ellen. Happy New Year!
Eileen Morison
11 years agoI prefer 3 letters but it all depends on the project.
Sue J
11 years agoI love the 3-letter monograms. Recently, I was confronted with someone that had a hyphentated last name. I just used one letter monogram on her scarf…didn’t want to make the decision. But what would you use in that situation?
eileenroche
11 years ago AUTHORTradition says ‘no punctuation in monograms.’ But this is a modern society…so I would ask the recipient what they prefer.
Brenda McNeil
11 years agoI usually use a 3 letter if I know their middle name. If not just the single. Also according to their tradition. My dil is from Trinidad and doesn’t use 3 letter monograms.
pam eva
11 years agoWell, my husband and I have the same initials so I can get away with a two letter monogram and it includes both of us! so marry someone with the same initials, save thread!
Beverly Walker
11 years agoI typically use a three letter monogram.
Staci
11 years agoI prefer three letter monograms.
Patty Fiske
11 years agoI have yet to do a momogram, I suppose I will start with one
janice
11 years agoI have purchased a few monograms but haven’t used them yet. They look lovely on items of clothing and I purchase them but think I would look silly if I used them and they just sit on my computer.
nancyB
11 years agoThe choice depends on where it is going.
LoveBigEmbroideryMachines
11 years agoI prefer a single letter monogram – especially if one of the client’s names begins with a vowel. Many times three letter monograms spell something disastrous. However, if all initials begin with consonants and they look attractive put together – it’s a go!
Connie M
11 years agoI prefer single letter monograms for sheets, pillowcases and most home decor. For clothing I generally prefer three letter monograms.
Martha
11 years agoI used to stress about which letter to use, what order to put them in, what color should it be etc. I have looked up “the rules” for monogramming and have come to the conclusion that any lettering is acceptable as long as the customer is happy. My favorite at the moment is the single letter.
Kathy Stoessner
11 years agoFirst I want to say thank you for the great prize from last week
s assignment.
I prefer the 3 letter Monogram style. I use it for new engagement gifts. Bride, Groom first initial and future married initial in the center.
Debra Wilson
11 years agoIt depends on what the monogram is going on. Household uses usually get the 3 letter and personal items get a single letter.
Michele in IL.
11 years agoI use 3 letters. When doing it for couples I am traditional and put the MAN on the left.
Carol Seavitt
11 years agoI love 3 and 1 letter monogramming along with a border. And you are so right — have to play with the thread!
Teresa
11 years agoI use single letter Monograms. I too forget which order to put the letters in.
Caroline Burzan
11 years agoI have in the past done just one letter – but am going to do 3 on a purse so may change my mind 🙂
Pam Douglas
11 years agoI have done all but usually 3 – I too have a little problem with the placement but am getting better. I appreciate the hints given on the valuable blogs.
Donna Klug
11 years agoIt depends on the project. I prefer 3 letter monograms for most things. There are so many variations for lining up the letters for different and creative looks. However a single letter on a pillow sham or wall hanging can be quite impressive as long as the size of the design fits well.
Bonnie Gray
11 years agoI like the 3 letter mongrams, but have started to do a more modern approach since reading one of your other blogs, the first 2 letters over each other next to a larger last initial. I use it for the younger crowd when i personalize something.
Liz Fergus
11 years agoI really love the 3-letter monograms on something with plenty of room. Otherwise, I go with the single letter. Monograms make everything just a little more special, especially in a gift to a friend. 🙂
Anne Kimble
11 years agoI love embroidery on towels.
LaNae Walters
11 years agoI have never done a monogram before but after reading this I cant wait for the letter W to come so I can try it out these letter K’s are beatiful.
Jill T.
11 years agoI typically use 3 letter monogram. But there are times when I will use a single letter monogram (last name)on clothes for my daughter & me because we share clothes. So either of us can wear it.
JoanJ
11 years agoI like the simplicity of a single letter.
Anne Marie Reilly
11 years agoI have done more of the one letter monograms, but I also like the look of the three letter ones.
Beth R
11 years agoI love the look of a very elegant yet colorful one-letter monogram.
Vickie Yanik
11 years agoI like both the one letter and the three letter, but I have to look up the rule on doing 3 letters. I am still in the learning process of doing machine embroidery. So much to learn, but I really enjoy what I have done so far.
Fran O
11 years agoI typically use 2 letter monograms on the inside of bags and totes. I like single on towels, but then again it depends on what the letter is. Some letters don’t look as well single, then I will use two.
Terry Senko
11 years agoI love the way the letters can weave together to form a unique design in a 3-letter monogram. That’s my favorite for me or to fulfill a specific request. Due to the complications of divorce, remarriage, partnerships, etc it’s not always easy to figure out which 3 letters to use for some of my friends or family, so I most often use 1 letter on gifts.
mira k. patel
11 years agoI am still new to do machine embroidery. I am learning. like to follow your instruction. will go for single, double or three letters monogram and it all depend on project I have to do. but today I like your single letter monogram with candlewicking design.
Royce Zook
11 years agoSingle letter embossed on towels mainly.
I think your choice of white outline with grey highlights is very swank! I like the design as it shows a lot of balance.
CINDY
11 years agoI mostly do embroidery for children and prefer One letter.
Sylvia Kidwell
11 years agoI use all forms of monograms, to fit the project I am working on. I Love your monogram book and use the designs frequently from my copy of your book & CD. My favorite is the Twig frame. I used it on pillow cases, fleece jackets and hand towels! Lovely design, always a winner. I use separate colors on the momogran font and a coordinating one on the frame.Machine-Embroidered Monograms for the Home is wonderful!
Thank you, Eileen and Marie
Nancy Drake
11 years agoI like all styles. I use different styles for different projects. Really liked the colors in your examples.
Fran Wiest
11 years agoI haven’t actually done any monogramming yet, I am a little intimidated by it, never sure what kind of monogram to use. I would like to do a joint monogram for N & P (Nikki and Pete)but I never see the ampersand used. What would you suggest?
Mary Haggenmaker
11 years agoTry putting a heart in the middle.
Mary Haggenmaker
11 years agoEvery Christmas there are at least 2 people that look forward to getting their monogrammed handkerchiefs. I use 3 letters and do the diamond shaping. I had a wedding gift of towels that I put the single initial on with some fancy shapes on the side. Sometimes I get requests from others for the Christmas handkerchiefs and I have to make sure that I get all 3 initials.
Jane Thomas
11 years agoI like three letters in my monogram with the last name in the center, the first initial on the left of center, and the middle/maiden initial to the left of center.
Molly
11 years agoI prefer Single monogram , Mainly because it fits the whole family and the Item is more versatile in all rooms.
However I have no problem with the 2 and 3 monograms when personalizing things such as book bags and lunch pails and such.
Wendy Scott
11 years agoI personally like the 3 letter monogram.
Kristi Dennis
11 years agoI like single letter monograms best. I think they can look so elegant
susan
11 years agoMy choice of 1 or 3 monograms depends on the FONT I am going to use.
Pam
11 years agoI used to prefer 3 letter but with the great Monogramming designs I have discovered the single letter has won out.
Pam M
11 years agoI love intertwined three-letter monograms, but it totally depends on the look I’m going for and, as others have pointed out, some letters just look better on their own. I have a huge collection of alphabets and just love playing with them in my spare time. Not much good at it – but having lots of fun anyway.
Nita
11 years agoIt depends on the object I am embroidering on, size of the monogram/object and placement. I don’t think that I have a hard and fast rule just play it by ear, and as you said, practice, practice, practice.
Nancy H
11 years agoI usually use only one letter because I have a hard time deciding whose initial would go first thus making them feel “more important” than the one in the second position…rules, schmules, I do what looks the best with the font I am using
Dee
11 years agoI prefer the single monogram – for some reason just seems more personal – and less formal. And since I have always been known by my middle name, putting another initial first would confuse people for my own stuff.
Anne Kimble
11 years agoI like all 3 letters on most items.
Terri
11 years agoDepends on the project, really because I like the look of all of them. I made a small clutch bag several years ago with one monogram and I truly love it…it is an elegant, yet functional piece.
Elizabeth_T
11 years agoI personally like the single letter monograms, but I actually stitch more of the traditional three letter version as that is what most people are looking for.
deb bremer
11 years agoI like the 3 letter monograms. I have to get better at sizing them correctly though. I plan on doing sets of towels for myself and my family this year so will be playing with them more. Have a Happy New Year!
Della Carr
11 years agoI am new to the monogram, I have 12 sets of towels to monogram. I have been really drawn to the 3 letter type, they look so nice. Since I have so many to do, and many people have different ideas, and I am going to be testing out quite a few different ones. I would love to win the Machine embroidered monograms for the home. It would make these jobs so much better for me. Thanks for giving us a chance to win. Happy New Year!!
Julie K
11 years agoPersonally I love the single initial monogram, but it seems that everyone I’ve stitched monograms for always ask for the 3-letter monogram. I need more practice though – they never look as polished when I’m finished as I hoped they would be!
Sherrie Lilly
11 years agoI love to monogram. What I use depends on the situation like who it is for and if it is for a special occasion. Bath towels I usually do 3 letter, napkins, pillow shams and hand towels are one letter sometimes 2 letters. I don’t do much childern things but they are usually 1 appliqued letter.
Vanessa B
11 years agoI love the look of 3 letters but most often go with single letter mongrams 🙂 Thank You!!!
Cheryl A
11 years agoThe number of letters I use when monogramming depends on what it’s going on, the effect I want, and the monogram font or alpha itself.
Susan J
11 years agoI love the simple 3 letter diamond, but I try to evaluate the project and the font before deciding which way to go.
Elaine Budner
11 years agoI like the three letter monogram.
Bernice Keller
11 years agoI love monograms. Whether I use one or three letters depends on the item monogrammed and who it is for. Both are fun to do.
Gwenie
11 years agoHappy new year to you and all us crazy embroiders I love the one monogram it does look very chic and personal on gifts to friends and love ones .Have not used the wing needle yet but that’s my next project ..so meant things to try bring it on 2014 .
Lindae
11 years agoI do whatever the customer wants. Usually they want three letters
Deborah Snyder
11 years agoI like the look of a one letter monogram.
Brn-Brn
11 years agoI like the single letter as it can be larger since you are not using three.
Pam
11 years agoMost of the time I like the 3 letter monograms. Depending upon the letters used, sometime I will only use one to get the look that is best.
Mary J Chevalier
11 years agoMostly I do single letter, but what is correct when the bride keeps her maiden name ?
Donna F
11 years agoI usually do single color monogramming. I have done two projects with the Monogramming that came in my machine that that was large letters with two colored flowers. I’m usaully doing towels or pillow cases. I never thought about the difference thread weight would make.
Colleen Gnehm
11 years agoI like to do single letter. I feel I have much more freedom with other embellishments when I only use one letter.
Carole D
11 years agoI like the three letter ones, but sometimes the “words” they spell out are not too flattering, so one must be careful. I also like the single larger letter with fancy embellishment. Sometimes if they are very embellished, more than one letter is overkill.
Denice Weys
11 years agoI like single monogram designs with just a little embellishment. Multiple letters and details that obscure the letters are too cluttered for my liking.
Karen McDonner
11 years agoI love and use monograms both ways. It all depends on what the monogram is going on. Thanks for the tips, just love the fancy single letter mono.
Paule-Marie
11 years agoI haven’t done many (okay only 1) monograms by machine. But a whole bunch of years ago when my grandmother taught me to embroider, the first project I remember doing was a monogram – it was just the one letter, but I stitched it the same way I see embroidery machines stitch out – and outline, an underlayment and then the fill stitch – in this case a satin stitch.
Phyllis Anne
11 years agoI agree with many of the others; I like a 3-letter monogram best. But, having said that, the single and double monograms also have their place and are as beautiful…it all depends on what you are putting the monogram on. Talk about “personalization”, what could be better than your own initials (or those of a loved one) that can turn into art by the style of the alphabet letter and the placement. If you haven’t already, check out EmbroideryArts’ monograms, they are spectacular.
Debbue
11 years agoSo far I have done Single-letter only. Not because I don’t wish to do more, but because I am so new. Reading posts like this one is very inspiring and it also lets me know how important the testing process is. I used to be a person to jump in without testing anything ever. Thank you so much for the tips!
Alice Beers
11 years agoI am just getting back into embroidery and have always loved cutwork monograms. I especially love 3 letter monogram. They are so elegant and well worth the time.
Debe
11 years agoI like both single & 3-letter monograms, depending on the project I’m working on. I like 3 better than 2 as I feel they are more “balanced.
Polly
11 years agoLove 3 letter monograms in a frame, but often use 1 letter.
Elizabeth
11 years agoI’m a pretty traditional gal, I like the 3-letter Script monograms the best.
Julia Floyd
11 years agoThe one-two-three letter monograms are all lovely and a classy addition to many objects. For personal items such as scarves, shawls, T-shrits and bags, I usually use a three letter monogram. I like the artistic look with “curly” letters intertwined. For children I just use a first name rather than a monogram. For household monograms such as towels, napkins, I use a one letter monogram. I love monograms and they are probably the item I embroider most often.
Judi Stello
11 years agoPutting monograms on items depends on where it’s going in my home. In each others baths, they get their own initial. If it’s a gift they get the formal 3 letter fancy initials. If it’s a child’s gift, I usually use two, it’s much easier for them to understand why two letters are used. I have yet to give a gift of a towel or sweater with monograms on and not have it received with a bad reaction. Also, depending on the reciepient, I will ‘dress’ up the monogram so it will blend in with the other designs I work the monogram with. Giving it a very high quality, professional look. That has brought more people seeking me out to do them the same look!
Carolyn Cohen
11 years agoMy granddaughters want three initials so that is what I do the most.
Charlotte Key
11 years agoI enjoyed curling up with my favorite quilt and reading the Book Cooko’s Calling.
Katherine H
11 years agoIt depends on the project. I try to make the monogram best fit the type of project and the space available.
Linda
11 years agoI like the 3 letter the most but sometimes I do the 2 letter. I’ve taken a class with you two years ago and loved it and your tips and techniques as well as all your designs.
Pat
11 years agoIt depends upon what I’m doing and for whom. If I’m making a gift for someone in particular, I’ll use a single-letter monogram. If I’m making a wedding gift or a gift for a couple, I’ll use three letters.
Astrid Gallet
11 years agoMonograms are one of my favorite embroidery projects to do! I especially like to incorporate them on bridal veils. Even though the traditional calls for three, I adore the exquisite beauty of a well-designed single letter. Sometimes, if needed, I blend two letters into one, making one the shadow of the other.
Barb Torrey
11 years agoIn most cases I love three letter monograms, especially when there are three different letters. I often use these for wedding gifts as it really represents the joining of two lives. I like single monograms for more contemporary applications and items.
Your samples are beautiful. Thank you for your tips and explanations of potential problems.
Julie R
11 years agoWell, I just received an embroidery machine for Christmas from my loving husband and now I am ready to get it on! I told him I was going to monogram his underwear and everything else in the house! SO GLAD I stumbled upon this site!! Bookmarked and can’t wait to try out each of the 192 styles of monograms. This is my first experience with embroidery and I am very excited. My daughter asked if I would monogram a coffee cozy for her. I said OF COURSE. Now to read through that giant manual. Wish me luck. 🙂
Gina
11 years agoI love the challenge and diversity of the 3 letter Monogram. By having more than one letter you can create some amazing looks/designs.
Rosemary O'Koren
11 years agoI like one letter. My last name begins with an O. I find it hard to find a nice looking O. I like to do monograms for others.
Gerry Barrett
11 years agoMost of the time I use the large, single letter. But the runner up is the 3 initials with the last name letter being in the middle & larger…forgot what it’s called!
Sandy DuBose
11 years agoI usually stitch out 3 letter monograms. Depending on the project, some items look better with just one letter.
Doreen
11 years agoI like to use all three but sometimes I do one or two.
DIana Dyer
11 years agoI love doing monograms. I do single letter monograms the most. I like to use the three letter monograms on wedding gifts. Monograms are classy!
Betty Rose
11 years agoI love all machine embroidery, but enjoy monogramming because it lends such a personal touch to everything on which it’s applied and am forever seeking new monogram designs. Each project seems to require its own number of letters and style – part of the thrill and challenge of completing the item and I find trial-and-error experimenting not only necessary but fun in producing the best project possible.
Rho
11 years agoI like single letter monograms, very versatile.
Beverly Jefferies Vance
11 years agoI prefer three letters with the center one a bit larger
Joyce Hardiman
11 years agoI like to use all three, but sometimes only know two. I also am very fond of using one when they are very large.
kathy
11 years agoI usually do 1 letter monograms. But this year I would like to experiment with 2 or 3 letter. I especially love the designs I have seen.
Karen
11 years agoI use all three it makes a difference what the project is.
Judy Wentz
11 years agoIt depends on what I am using the monogram for. I use either the three-letter or the single-letter monograms. I have never used two-letter monograms.
Paula Watson
11 years agoI love monogramming! I monogram anything that I can from towels to tote bags to my new fave, monogrammed chevron scarves. I typically use either one or three letters. It just depends on the project. I love monogramming sheets (on the top border) and pillow cases for a special gift. I usually use just one letter for these. On totes and other bags, I generally use three letters. I just did a hoodie for my daughter-in-love as a Christmas gift. I used a large, swirly three letter monogram. She loved it!!! Happy sewing!!
Mary E. Baker
11 years agoI am new at monogramming. In fact I have only monogramed three things. I put one letter on a bag and three letters on two sweat shirts. I did these all in the last three days so I don’t know which I like best. I think it would depend on the project.

11 years agoWhen I do it is usually one or three letters. I prefer the one letter monograms as you can play with the colours as in your blog. I used the 3 letter monogram on two sets of towels for two weddings. I did the one set in gold and yellow on white towels and the other set in silver and white on black towels.

11 years agoI love the look of a single, very large monogram. Classic and understated never goes out of style.

11 years agoI love the look of three initials on specific items such as pillow cases, sheets, towels, but like the single initial on a personal item for a member of the family. On family items I use the three initials – husband on left and wife on right with family initial in the middle. I would love to win the monogram of the month! Happy stitching, everyone!

11 years agoI usually use three letters with the larger (last name) in the center position for very personal items. If I just want a bit of embroidery, I’ll use the couple’s last name initial and a frame. When it’s an item that can handle three initials and it’s for a couple, I use the large initial in the center of their last name and put the wife’s first name initial left of center and the husband’s first name initial right of center. I think that’s the easiest, most recognizable method. For napkins, it’s fun to stack the first initial of each member of the couple and then make their last name initial equal to the two stacked letters with them on the left.

in a frame. For newly weds, 3 letter, first initials of bride and groom with the center initial larger . Last name.

11 years agoI have done mostly 3 letter monograms and prefer them. I like to do different things with them like different shapes and fonts. I like to do monograms for couples with the sir name initial larger in the center. Your single monograms are beautiful and inspire me to experiment with the colors.

11 years agoI do what the the person paying me wants BUT if they ask me, I will laways pick three. Sometimes when I see all the “fun” fonts I think that the fancy and classy fonts will be lost in time. I have made my granddaughter shirts for her American with fancy fonts and two with fun fonts, while playing I heard her say “this one is my favorite we have to be careful” it was thefancy font shirt. This also was a way to teach her about initials.

11 years agoHi Eileen,
I prefer the three initial monograms, and they look beautiful on the cashmere scarves I did for Christmas for my girls. After trying various ways of stabilizers, even the one that was recommended by the scarf manufacturer in Scotland, (they said use Floriani’s fusible, water solubile) The one that worked best, and left no little white bumps of residue, was just regular mesh Wet n Gone. By the way, how can I purchase the “Monograms of the month”?
Or is it only available as on your blog? Thanks for your help.

10 years agoI love monograms. I use more three letter monograms than single ones because of being able to be more creative with size and arrangement of them. I love the single ones too, especially the ones just showed us.
