Nancy Zieman and I have seen so many versions of Designer Handbags (our first handbag embroidery collection and book), we decided to create a second series, Designer Knockoffs, Handbags 2. This collection focuses on trendy grommets, beautiful and functional pockets plus in-the-hoop techniques. I have to admit, I love these new bags! Let me show you my favorite details.
The grommets are highlighted by subtle embroidered details while precisely stitched cut lines are hidden underneath the grommets. This combo of function and beauty guarantees success for all embroiderers and produces extremely professional results.
I think many of you would agree that the best part of making your own bag is customizing it to your needs. Nancy shares her coveted technique for making interior pockets and I love how my personal items – cellphone, nail file, pen and more – each have a special storage spot, nestled under a monogrammed label! Love that!
If you’re a fan of exterior pockets, then you’ll enjoy a roomy exterior pocket like the Scallop lace pocket – created in the hoop. It looks complicated but I’ve added some key elements to make the continuous embroidery easy to duplicate. I share two continuous embroidery techniques in the book – applicable to any embroidery machine.
In addition to the book, Nancy invited me to teach the whole process on Sewing with Nancy. You can watch online here. Of course, what you see on television doesn’t reveal all of the prep that goes into taping or writing or book. And it always seems to start with my suitcase practically imploding in Nancy’s office. Truth be told, there’s nothing glamorous about this career. Even the airline employees shake their head when see how many bags I check for such short journeys!
But once it’s all sorted out in the conference room, we make a list and then divide and conquer.
Nancy handles the script and tricky sewing details and I man the embroidery machine.
After a bit, okay – HOURS of stitching, we’re ready to pack the van to head to the studio.
And before you know it, we’re sitting on the set of Sewing with Nancy.
And now Designer Knockoffs, Handbags 2, is available for you to watch and make your own bags. I can’t wait to see the fabrics and grommets you select. Before you get started, tell me what your favorite bag is: the red diamond bag, teal scallop pocket purse, the green starburst bag or the small clutch. Two lucky winners will get an autographed copy of Designer Knockoffs, Handbags 2.

11 years agoOh, it is so hard to choose between the teal scallop pocket purse and the small clutch, but I would use the purse more, so that is my choice. I do love the lace in both of those designs and see many ways to them. Count the teal scallop pocket purse as my first choice. Thank you so much for offering this for free and especially thank you for all your hard work in developing another great line of purses.
Terry Brinkley
11 years agoEileen, I like all of them. But, I am a big fan of being organized so the blue/white, lace exterior pocket one would have to be my favorite to help me keep my essentials, (keys, cell phone and sunglasses), handy. 🙂

11 years agoLove them all! What a wonderful idea, a second book of designer handbags. Tis the season for Christmas I like the red diamond one best.
Cheryl
11 years agoWow, they are all great looking it is hard to pick which one I like best. My first thought is the teal one because I love the color and the scallop gives a nice touch to make it a bir girly. Then I look at the red and love the simplicity and style of it. But hold on, the green is a great size and has nice long straps to go on shoulder comfortably. And last, but not least, small clutch is so useful and i always have a small clutch inside any of my purses so that it is easier to locate those items that otherwise fall to the bottom of bigger purses. Can I just pick them all!!!!
Cynthia Wentworth
11 years agoThey are all wonderful.but if I have to pick, the teal scallop pocket purse would be my choice. My daughter would pick the red.

Chris
11 years agoI love the teal scallop pocket purse. The color speaks to me, and then those pockets are a great bonus!
Peggy Schroeder
11 years agoHi Eileen, Love the red one, the teal is pretty, but with the beige scallops and embroidery, the first thing that comes to mind to me is that it looks like a pair of women’s underwear! They are all nice, but I just love red.
A question for you: what would the best kind of stabilizer and monogram you would put on a 100% cashmere scarf? Have several to do for Christmas, and as they are VERY expensive, don’t want to make a mistake.
Thanks for all of your help, and I hope to be able to go to your Stitching Sisters event in Sacramento again. Just going two times is not enough.
eileenroche
11 years ago AUTHORHi Peggy,
Nice to hear from you. Cashmere…ooh that’s pricey material. I don’t have a lot of experience stitching on cashmere but here’s how I would approach it. I would use a polymesh cut-away in a color as close to the scarf as possible (black polymesh for a dark cashmere, white or beighe for light tones). After the embroidery, I would trim the polymesh close to the stitching.
Another option would be to use organza as a stabilizer because you could match the organza to the color of the scarf. it’s just as stable as polymesh.
I suggest testing the design on wool – doesn’t have to be cashmere but it should similar in weight and knit (tight, loose, open, etc). Then use the results of the test to work on the cashmere. Good luck with this Peggy – you can do it!
Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Peggy Schroeder
11 years agoThanks, Eileen, I will give it a try. I don’t have a lot of time to sew right now, my husband is going through chemotherapy for terminal cancer, so I bought pre-made scarves, just did not have time to sew and embroider, so of course, the embroidery won! I just do not want to make any mistakes on them, so I need all the help I can get, as I have never embroidered on cashmere until now. I have four daughters, along with their spouses, 13 grands, and 3 great-grands, all of which are mostly girls. I thought these would be easy and fast to do, but they aren’t. I think it is my fear of making a mess of them that makes it so slow. I thought bridal tulle would be good for a topper, and that can be trimmed right up close to the stitches. I use it a lot, and have never had a problem with the stitching peeking through.
Thanks so much for the advice, I do appreciate it, and have a great holiday season. Best wishes to you and Pete.
Barbara McKenzie
11 years agoOh, Peggy – I’m so glad I’m not the only one! All I can see when I look at the teal purse is underwear…..pretty underwear, but underwear! So I’m afraid that pattern is spoiled for me. 🙁
D Bartlett
11 years agoI like the red and also the lime. I would emb. on the front of them.
Peggy Schroeder
11 years agoBarbara, I agree! But maybe, if it was done with a black pocket, or there wasn’t such a stark difference in the two colors, it might be okay, but I am afraid if I tried to make it, I would still think of pretty, lacy, underwear. Not just prety, but beautiful, underwear! Love the great embroidery, though.
Peggy Schroeder
11 years agoBarbara, maybe it would be okay if there was not such a stark difference in the colors, or maybe black. I don’t know, I think if I tried to make it, I could not get the underwear vision out of my head. It is really beautiful lace, but still—–? I thought, like you, I was the only one!
Have a great holiday.
Roberta B
11 years agoI really like the coin purse and the blue bag. I’ve wanted to make my own purse for quit awhile, I just haven’t had the courage to make one yet.

11 years agoMy eye was immediately drawn to the teal and lace, though they are all lovely. I would make every one on them and probably will. The first one I would make is the teal, and I can hardly wait to begin! That is definitely my first choice. I’m really interested in making the change purse–that will be something I’ve not tried. These are all really impressive purses…

11 years agoI have to pick the red diamond as my favorite, even though I love every one of them! I just finished making the “Airborne Bag”, which is a Christmas gift for my daughter. I used a zebra print with deep orange accent fabric, to match her luggage. Then I added a “purse” luggage tag to match, from the Shelly Smola “All for Me” collection. Can’t wait to give it to her!

11 years agoOh, to choose, such a hard decision! I am really a teal person, so that would be my choice. To be able to make new handbags from an autographed copy of the book would be absolutely awesome!

11 years agoI really love the teal scallop, but the little clutches in different colors are beautiful too!! I am just getting an embroidery machine for Christmas this year and can’t wait to learn to do this type of sewing! I know I’m going to need a lot of help learning, so your instructional videos would be great!! So would this book, as I am really interested in learning to make purses and bags for my family as gifts!

11 years agoDecisions..decisions. Each purse has a feature that I like. I like the zipper in the top of the red purse and the style and size of the lime green one, but I think the teal scalloped one is my favorite because of the outside pocket. I guess I need to combine the best of each for my ideal purse.
Do you have an insert pattern that holds most of one’s purse “stuff” in order to make changing purses easier? Then all I would have to do is lift the insert out of one and drop it into another.
Mary Haggenmaker
11 years agoI love the Teal color, but it looks like it is wearing a pair of panties. It just sort of hit me that way. My best bet would probably be the red one.
Bridget Cheatham
11 years agoThat teal scallop bag is gorgeous! It looks feminine and kind of vintage. I could see that style becoming one of my favorites…and I’m already thinking of other color/fabric combinations I would like to try.
Judy G
11 years agoI really like the shape of the red purse, but love outside pockets. Can I put the scallop pocket on the red purse? And I really love clutches and the embroidered clutch is so adorable. I would probably have to make both.
eileenroche
11 years ago AUTHORJudy, you can definitely mix and match the details on all of the purses. The red bag would be adorable with the lace pocket!
Barbara
11 years agoThey’re all so exciting! Red is my favorite color, but the small clutch is the one that made my heart beat a little faster!
Nancy Weber
11 years agoI love the little green clutch purse. I have made several types of purses, but I am intimidated by the closure mechanism on the clutch. Purses are fun to make and I can see why you and Nancy are so over the moon about making them!
Claudia Wade

Ena Hitt
11 years agothe teal/blue one with the scallop pocket would be my choice! I used your first book today & love it!!
Vicky Isliefson
11 years agoI like the red one. The shape looks familiar. Is it one of Nancy’s Trace ‘n Create patterns. I’m afraid the teal bag looks like it is wearing Victoria’s Secret lacy topped under pants! The bottom corners look like leg holes.
JJ
11 years agoI would use the green starburst because it is so simple a style that it would be timeless. I would also love to learn the technique for making the the clutch as I like the closure on it and would like to know how to incorporate this closure in some other types of sewing projects.
You and Nancy make a great team. I always know something wonderful is going to develop when you are on the show. Nancy has a way of making all her guests shine and the projects become doable after watching all the tips she has to share.
I know you do this because you love it, but thanks for sharing it with the rest of us so we don’t have to reinvent the wheel so to speak. So we can spend more time making great projects that turn out the first time almost every time.
Happy Holidays to you and Nancy

11 years agoI had attended the “Stitching Sister ” last year in San Marcos CA, and I have just about finished the purse I started when I came home from there, so my favorite purse in this book would be the little clutch, as it would only take one hoop…I could write a book about the stitching and ripping in doing this last purse..
My husband was just wantng a bus ticket out of town…We did have a good laugh when I so thoroughly stitiched the purse handles to the stabalizer, with the purse body still laying over on the sewing table…ha ha ha …Buy I did buy “Handbags 2”, and look forward to doing several from the book, and maybe even tackle the travel set from the first book…I am just a little SLOW…
Thanks for all the great information…Ada Hale, Murrieta, CA

11 years agoI really like the teal purse! I am just getting started in machine embroidery, and have been watching Nancy for years when I can on my day off from my real estate office. I would like to make some of your purses from your first book as well as the second one.
Annette
11 years agoEileen, I recently purchased both of your handbag books. My favorite is the little clutch. However I am unable to find the purse frames with the handle tabs as illustrated in your book…Handbags 2…on page 63. I ordered some from Nancy’s Notions but they do not have the handle tabs. Do you sell them on your site? Any help would be appreciated as I want to make some for a wedding party.

6 years agoAll bags are great! That’s cruel of you to asking us to choose only one favorite 🙂
I find small clutch the best, especially the pattern on it – reminds me of something Oriental, though I am not clear what…
My second favorite is teal bag…
I will start saving from today 🙂
