Wahoo! A Yard a Day?

What’s all the hype about?  My Fabric Designs.com is sponsoring a contest for a whole month! Just enter and you could win a yard of fabric. That’s all you have to do, enter and win.

So what is My Fabric Designs? My Fabric Designs allows you to create your own custom fabric by the yard! For full disclosure, I am a co-founder of the company and I’m excited to give crafters (just like me!) more choices when creating projects involving fabric. Now, you can upload a doodle from your grandchild, a picture of a favorite pet, an image you fell in love with or something you created yourself on the computer and turn it into custom printed fabric.

Imagine the possibilities! A quilt created with images of your family and friends. A sun dress made from a clip art image you discovered online. It’s all possible and more, thanks to digital textile printing. You can create your own or shop from the posted inventory. And best of all – it never goes out of stock. You can make curtains today, a quilt in 6 months and slipcovers in a year.

Digital textile printing involves a highly-specialized ink jet printer which prints directly onto fabric or depending on the fabric type, a sublimation heat transfer process. This method of creating textiles uses less energy, creates less waste and allows for small runs of fabric, as little as a fat quarter at a time.

You simply upload your design, choose your fabric and in 7-10 business days, your custom, one-of-kind fabric is delivered direct to your door. chipsBL

Whether you’re interested in creating quilts, garments, home decor or crafts, I hope the ability to print your own custom fabrics for your projects opens up an entirely new avenue of creativity for you.

In fact, I used My Fabric Designs to create DIME’s cheater quilts. I had so much fun digitally creating the quilts. But the best part was when I received them. I didn’t have to bother with piecing! I got right to the fun part – the quilting.CheaterBL

Here’s your assignment this week:

Pop over to My Fabric Designs and enter the contest. While you’re there, browse in the fabrics (click on Shop) and tell me what fabric you’d like to win. We’ll pick a random winner here next Wednesday. If we pick your name, we’ll ship you one yard of the fabric you mentioned in your comment.

The winner of the last assignment answered the following question:

I know many of you have taken on impressive embroidery projects. I’m sure you get a sense of satisfaction when complete. And I think its rewarding to look at the pile of used bobbin and do a head count.  So tell me, have you ever had a 7 bobbin kind of day?  What’s the most bobbins you’ve gone through on a single project? We’ll pick one random winner to receive a $20 gift certificate to Designs in Machine Embroidery.

The winner is:

Lois: “I used 14 bobbins while completing 105 placemats for my daughter’s wedding. I embroidered two wolves on each placemat after quilting them. Lots of work but worth it?”

I check out the whole website and all the fabric selections. Some of my favorites included the peony under flowers, a couple of the hearts under Holidays, the whale fabrics under nautical, just to name a few. I was, however, confused about the pricing: fabric appeared to be 56″ wide, 1 x 8.75= $8.75. It’s late, so maybe I just read it wrong.

I like Circle Design by thirdandwall. However, I don’t like the UI very much. You can’t view more than 20 items at a time. You can’t right-click (or control-click) and open a fabric in a new window. Hovering over an image shows the name, not a larger view of the fabric. You can’t search by artist. When you page through a category, you can’t use the back button to go to the previous page — it takes you to the first page of the previous category you visited instead. When you click for the next page from the bottom controls, you have to manually scroll up after the page loads. The images are kinda slow to load. And while I’m on a roll, I don’t like “JustForHim.” As though only men like crossbones? And only women like flowers? That is seriously lame if not downright backwards.

Thank you for your valuable input. Most of the focus before launch was put into curating the fabrics, designs and perfecting our print quality. You have a savvy eye for UI design and we’re happy to say most of these items are currently in development for future releases. Stay tuned, we’ll only get better!

I’ve worked on websites before, so perhaps that makes me … um, more easily annoyed? 😉 … when I encounter a site that doesn’t work the way I think it should. I’m looking forward to My Fabric Designs.com growing and improving! 🙂

Pretty Paint Swirls is my favorite. It would be great for any of my granddaughters or as an applique fabric instead of the polka dots that are so popular right now. It would give lots of movement, color, and a variety of colors to an applique.

  • Sylvia

I would like to design on the heavy twill

  • Susan

What a great idea. My favorite is “palms hibiscus”

  • Donna G.

Great fabric! I especially like License Plates.

  • Valerie

Ohh, so many choices. And the option to design my own!!!! Whoo Hoo!
I think my fave so far is
    RainbowTwist
    But I also like:
    VS-Floral-001
    ModBeat
    FloatingRounds
    RoundSketches
    ColorTwists

  • Judie

So many gorgeous fabrics but my ultimate pick would be “Ferns on Black”. It would make a great focus fabric for a very classy quilt.

  • Sandi Cunningham

WOW! the choices are innovative, colorful and eclectic. I instantly fell in love the black cats on white, but my fav FAV is: UnderTheSea
What a wonderful choice for home dec and decorators!

  • Kathy

I spent some time looking at the beautiful fabric on My Fabric Designs. I love the variety of different design patterns. Some of them like wagons wheels, hot shot and blue diamonds would be beautiful designs to use in zentangle.

  • Ann

“Paisley on White”. it’s very colorful and would look great in a little girls dress.

  • Terri

    I really liked “WordFind”.

  • judy

I loved a lot of the designs, but NOLA on white #8300-A and Maria-Bogade_Dreaming were my favoriates.

  • Kathy E.

So many drool-worthy fabrics at MyFabricDesigns! My favorite is something similar to what I’ve been looking for and it’s French Script by MF Designs. I love the small text in fabrics and would like to collect several! Now I need to learn French, so I can read the fabric!

  • Doree Shandera

What a great idea…will definitely be looking.

On another note, where in Washington state can I purchase the word art software?

  • Kathleen Carls

I like the Pink Ribbon on Black fabric, since I am a breast cancer survivor! Thanks for the chance to win fabric.

  • beth

Thanks for the win. I would love to win any of these fabrics.

  • Barbara

OH.MY.GOODNESS! So many to choose from! And me promising not to buy any more fabric until I use up some of my stash…as if! LOVE 8549-A Leafs, Floating Rounds, and Ferns on Black. Sent the link to every quilter I know! Thanks for the website!

  • Karen

Lots of great fabrics hard to pick just one, but would say Spattered Blooms.

  • Peafarm

Would love any of these-I do all kinds of projects so it would be fun to be in the ‘think tank’ that revolves around one of these prints. I usually pick out ‘tame’ fabrics but need to think ‘young and more flamboyant’.

  • veronica higgins

Got so excited, i had to share this on my website. I love love love retro squares.

  • Carolyn

I loved too many, but my choice to win would be “Crab Line Dance” because I have a project it would be perfect for.

  • Sara Redner

So many to choose from, but I think my favorite is Tie Dyed Teal.

  • Lex Appel

I would love to win a yard of Flower 2_OCAT-122 MF

I’m always looking for tropical fabric. If I win, make mine palm trees.

  • Laurel D

What fun is this!!!???? Had to forward the news on to my sister who is a dedicated quilter (and a confessed fabric hoarder ). Can’t wait to try to create my own fabric — thanks for bringing this option to our attention … if I were to win, I’d choose the Happy Pigs to make something special for my best friend (of over 45 years) who loves pigs and is fighting cancer — what happiness that fabric could bring!

  • Doreen Linehan

I’d like to win the Neon Kitchen fabric. All of the fabrics are very interesting. It was hard to narrow it down to just one.

  • Ruth H

Good to know about this company!! I especially like MORNING DEW 3_OJAR-25
