Nancy Zieman Hobo Bag Tour

Hobo Tote

Hobo Tote Bag Blog Tour

Hip, Hip, Hooray! Today we’re a stop on the Nancy Zieman Hobo Bag Tour. Nancy sent me all kinds of goodies

  • Hobo Tote Templates
  • Create-a-Strap interfacing
  • Magnetic snap closures
  • Bag feet and
  • a Create-A-Shape bag shaper

Lazy Girl Designs sent

  • interfacing – Face-It Soft (woven fusible interfacing) and
  • Stiff Stuff Firm (sew-in interfacing).

I used the Stiff Stuff Firm to add body to the quilted bag but truth be told, I’m hoarding the Face-It Soft for a while. I have a feeling Face-It Soft is going to do double-duty in my sewing room as an embroidery stabilizer. I’ll keep you posted on how that turns out in a later posting.

If you’ve been following the Hobo Tote Tour, you’ll notice my bag looks a bit different than all of the others. I decided to add the pocket to the OUTSIDE of the bag instead of the inside. And since I’m an embroiderer, I had to find a way to use my embroidery machine to make the pocket a bit more interesting than just a contrasting fabric.

Hobo Tote Bag

Here’s what I did. I purchased pre-quilted fabric (I cheated, I know but life is short!) and found coordinating fabrics for the appliques and lining in my avalanche, I mean, stash of fabric. Then I turned to my book, Machine Embroidered Quilting and Applique, for the scallop design, ContScallopCir.

Machine Embroidered Quilting

ContScallopCir

I followed the directions on the Trace ‘n Create Bag to cut my fabrics but I cut my pocket fabric 3” wider than required. By wider, I mean from the bottom of the bag to the top of the pocket. So maybe that’s actually taller!

This design adds a facing to the scalloped edge and is so fast and easy to stitch. I opened the design in software and eliminated the quilting stitches since my fabric was already quilted.

Scallop2
Then I hooped the fabric in Snap Hoop (no need for stabilizer since the fabric was a pre-quilted sandwich). After stitching the appliques, I added the facing strip.

Hooped in Snap-Hoop
To make a long continuous strip, you’ll find clear, concise instructions for this method in Machine Embroidered Quilting and Applique along with a video demonstration on the included DVD. Basically, I used Target Stickers to connect the designs, end to end.

Facing Strip
Once the whole strip was stitched, I trimmed close to the scallop edge and turned the facing right side out. Perfect scallops!

I basted the scalloped strip to the bag fabric and followed Nancy’s instructions for completing the tote. What fun!

Want to win one of the six blog tour prizes? Post a comment on Nancy’s site and share your thoughts about the Hobo Totes you see on the blog tour and/or about the Hobo Tote you’re planning to make. I think I would like some more information on quilting as you go with large blocks. I am working on a large quilt using 25″ blocks with sashings and would like to know a little bit more on putting together using the quilt as you go method! Thanks, Ginger

  • Paule-Marie

I would like to see more about both continuous hoops and in the hoop projects like small totes, etc that require no additional stitching on a sewing machine.

  • charlotte S.

Love the fabrics used. Very eye popping. I never made a tote, so this makes seem something I would like to try.

  • Nancy

I would like to see more variations on embroidery designs like how you changed the continuous scallop edges on this bag – will try this on a bag for the summer beach towels – just love Nancy and Eileen!!

  • beth daniels

I think you ought to do a blog on quilting in the hoop, but smaller hoops not big ones. Also, how to digitize quilting motifs in hoops and the procedures.

  • Vicki B.

Quilting in the hoop, for sure, and projects to use up scraps, including thread?

    • Mary Haggenmaker

I save thread scraps and put them in between 2 sheets of ironable clear vinyl. You can then use the ironed vinyl the same way you would use any other vinyl fabric. The thrad in between makes it unique.

  • Shirley Clark

I love, love your bag! It is beautiful! I had the pleasure of meeting Nancy Zieman in January at a Babylock Event in Shreveport, LA. She is such a lovely person, and so talented. I got to hear 2 lectures along with demonstrations. It was fabulous!
I would also like to see posts on continuous hoop embroidery. I’ve been wanting to try it, but am just fearful of making a mess.

    Shirley C

  • Gail Beam

I would like to see more quilting with embroidery applique in the hoop projects.

  • Terrie Underwood

Oh, oh, oh I love your bag!!! I already have your book so now I have another project to work on. I just need more hours in my days!

  • Mary

Love the scallops on the tote. No suggestions as I am working very slowly on embroidering and in the hoop designs. Would love to try continuous some day. Oops, I guess that’s a suggestion.

  • Pat Baker

JUST purchased my first embroidery machine and I am truly STRUGGLING with the sewing/quilting concepts. I have no problem with the actual embroidery design, just the adding of it to a project – especially “in the hoop”! I am really hoping your blog will help! I am intriqued! I just LOVE the hobo bag – especially your scalloped edge pocket! So CUTE! Thanks for the chance to win~!

  • gayle

I would like to see more on multi hooping. I would love to be able to make larger designs.

  • Barbara McKenzie

As so many others have posted, more blogs on quilting in the hoop and quilt as you go projects would be wonderful!

  • Diana

I owuld like to see Dog embroidery covered more as well as continuous hoop embroidery .. thank you for the chance to win .. thanks for putting this site out there so we in cyberspace can learn more fun things !!!

  • Krystyna

I’d love to see more about ITH quilting of fashion accessories of all sorts. Hats. Scarves. Vests. Sewing vests. Belts. So much to sew!

  • Becky

Never tried a quilt and somewhat scared to try. On one hand it is a challendge and on the other another sewing addiction. I realize that for most true quilters the quilt face blocks are the puzzling beautiful part of the quilt but isn’t the way the back and front is joined together just as important. I love the big scale look but it somewhat frightens me and I like the idea of being able to make a beginner quilt in the hoop or block by block and then joining them. I love new techniques. Thanks for the opportunity to learn more.

  • Gail sabramsky

I love your blog and love the fact that you did something different with the bag. I took your class on craftsy and would love to see you blog on continuos embroidery. I always have problems with getting it lined up straight! I don’t have a lot of time to embroider right now but I do want to make some pillow cases with embroidered tops soon so please consider this as a topic.

Also if you are interested I have a newsletter that I send out and you are in it! http://Www.notionnanny.com/ newsletter.html.

  • Mary Haggenmaker

Not worried about getting the prize this time because I already have it. Would like to see new ways to use scraps besides applique and quilt squares though..if there are any. Thanks for all your expertise. Looking forward to seeing you in April.

  • Virginia Madigan

I would love to see items on digitizing designs. I would love to be able to utilize my design software (Bernina) to the max. Thanks for the wonderful ideas.

    • Vonee

Virginia, I too have Bernina software. I have began to digitize with it thanks to a John Deere seminar I attended in 2011.He has a two disc digitizing program that has very user friendly methods to learn digitizing however, I will pass along the one tip he gave at the seminar that kick started my learning…..he said “you have to start with getting an understanding of the tools your software offers”. That truly is the key to learning digitizing no matter which software you own.

I am new to your blog and so glad you are part of this tour, your spin on this Tote Bag is very unique and I love that. I have not embroirder much, so pretty much any topic you might cover I am sure will be interesting to read, thank you for the opportunitty to win!

  • LP Starr

I would love to see the re-making of sweatshirts into nicer wearable fashion pieces.

  • betsy

I’d like to see ideas for owners of machines with small hoops. I teach embroidery and am very fortunate to have a very large hoop. But people come with the 100×100 hoop and I have to rethink what we can do. Yes – they could upgrade, but that’s not a financial possibility for many of these owners right now. They do dream of the future!

Hi Betsy – you’re in luck! We have a new column in Designs in Machine Embroidery magazine – 4×4 and Fabulous by Joann Connolly. It features really great projects designed just for the 4×4. It started in the January/February 2012 issue. I think it will be a great resource for you.

  • Anne Rita

For a bag, I would love to make a design with a circular hole in the hoop. Sort of like a reverse applique, but instead of a fabric peeking through, there is nothing. The whole needs to be covered by satin stitches. The idea is to use this as a pocket opening. Does this makes sense? I wonder how you stabilize this is in the best way.

    Thanks!

  • Nancy Owens

I would love to make a bag like this, the scalloped pocket is darling! I am sure whatever is covered in this blog or your wonderful magazine is going to enhance my embroidery skills! Thank you for the great inspiration each and every time.

  • Patty Sack

I would like to see more in the hoop designs/projects. Even how to design our own in the hoop designs.

  • Terri C.

How about doing an instructional segment on using the PAL (the laser that helps with alignment of embroidery). I recieved one for Christmas, after I saw you on a PBS show with one, and I’m still a bit confused. I love your blog too.

  • Rosalyn

I would like more instruction on hooping smaller items. Onsies and small T-shirts are always a challenge for me. There has to be an easier way. I would also like to see tips for “when something goes wrong” and how to get it fixed.

  • shirley tener

    its got style

  • Virginia

I would love to see more of applique in the hoop.

  • ME Pendleton

    Thx

  • Fran

Love the scallops. I would love to try this on a bag

  • Patty Fiske

I am just learning to use my embroidery machine. I am liking the idea of in the hoop projects. also how to do continuous embroidery placement. I must be missing a step.

  • Bev

I love thinking about quilting on my embroidery machine. But the mechanics of it often become overwhelming or stand in the way of success. How to control the weight of the projects, breaking it into smaller segments, getting the look of traditional quilting all would be helpful….

  • Donna F

Love your bag and the outside pocket. I would like to see more projects in the hoop. I also am interested in making some new clothes so perhaps ways to change an easy skirt pattern.

  • Darylene

Hi Nancy. I am starting to sew and quilt after a long absence from the machine. I would love to see anything on the blog that shows new methods so I don’t get caught up in ‘old’ techniques when I sew for my new Granddaughter (my first and my inspiration to create again with fabric 🙂 I am Canadian and devour your catalogue. I have purchased and will continue as your products are not always available to us. Thank you for all that you do 🙂

  • Kathy Anderson

So many hoops; I need help, DVDs, TV show, showing how to use these wonderful hoops. Not only in embroidery, but quilting, and home dec. methods.

  • Linda Martin-Hunt

Since I do not have an embroidery machine, I would appreciate ideas of designs using machine decorative stitches.

  • Susan Novak

Very intriguing tote bag. Haven’t made any yet.Would also like more ITH ideas/projects. Thank you.

  • June Piper-Brandon

Definitely variations of quilt as you go. I recently put a quilt together for a friend using that method. Each of us in the mini group did a strip and my task was to put them together and at first I was very intimidated, and would like to see more about that.

  • Carol Seavitt

Love love love the bag! Also, would love to see alignement with different types of projects without the target sticker. So many of us don’t have the Brother machine and well…we are doing our own aligning:) PAL helps though

  • Gail Fraley

I’d like to see more totally in the hoop designs.

  • Debbie

Love your take on the Hobo bag

  • Terry Senko

I would like to see more information about how to do things on older or more basic machines. For example, in this week’s blog you refer to target stickers. I have no idea how to use target stickers and I don’t think my machine has functionality for them.

  • Norma Jean McDarmont

I would like to see more on machine embroidery, illustrations on hooping correctly and incorrectly. I never get tired of reading and seeing instructions and shortcuts on embroidery. Thanks.

I’d love to more information on computer/embroidery software such as Embird. I tried to install the free trial, but couldn’t get it to work on my computer. (My computer met all of the requirements.) Also, it would be helpful to know how to use the software!

  • Debi Patrick

This is the prettiest of all the Hobo Bags so far. I am so enjoying this tour! I have 3 of Nancy’s Trace n Create bag templates and will definitely be adding this one! And since I have an embroidery machine but not this book/design set, I appreciate the opportunity to be in the drawing.

    • marianne

I would like to see ideas from taking a design and different ways to make a project. Often times you see a design and have some kind of idea what you will do with that design. But taking that design and make other projects. I have a lady who takes a project and by the time she is done she has 10 different projects because each time she is taking her project to a whole new dimension.

  • Tina

Just thinking about doing embroidery now. Need to know which machines are best for my use. The bag was very cute. Loved the colors.
    Thanks

    • Karen Poole

Hi Ginger, I own two embroidery machines and they are both Brother embroidery and sewing machines. I have founf the Brother brand to be really great sturdy machines, but there are many Brands out there. My suggestion before you buy would be to talk to friends who own machines and find out what Brand they have and what they think of it, what are the pros and cons of that Brand and model, and you can also visit several stores that sell various brands and “test” drive a few different brands to see what works best for you. Some are much more user feiendly then others. You also want to see what is offered with the machine, I would ONLyu buy from a store that offers free user classes for your new machine and in my opinion, having owned both machines, my first machine was my starter machine that had a 4 x 4 inch embroidery field, but it also does normal sewing. After having that machine for a short time I saoon realized I wanted a machine with a larger embroidery field as there are so many larger designs that are so great. My second embroidery machine is the Brother Duetta that has up to a 8 x 12 inch embroidery size hoop! And that is perfect for me. Buy the machine that has the largest embroidery size field that is in your budget. If you can only afford the 4 x 4 size you, like me, will soon be wishing you had bought a larger size embroidery field! So, there are some great brands that all have great features and buy one that fits your needs and is the most user friendly and buy it from a reputable store that will offer as much help as you need! You will not regret it if you do the homework first!

  • Kathy Schmidt

I would love more blogs on easy 2 make computer totes

I am more into quilting and am interested in learning how to applique and quilt in a block. I wish you had a magnetic hoop for the Bernina 440.

  • Mary Parkere

    Hi,
I would like to learn how to take a regular quilt and turn it into a quilt as you go. I have a BOM quilt blocks and would like to quilt it myself. Would love to win a copy of Machine Embroidered Quilting and Applique. It would really help! Also, liked how your bag turned out!!!
    Thanks!

  • Denise Spanos

I’d like to see an article on stabilizers. I never know if I am making the right choice.

    • Karen Poole

Hi Denise, I have found that you can go to the web sights of the stabalizer brand you are using and they will most likely have tutorials on each differeent stabalizer and what and how to use them, what fabrics and what type of desigsn. Also there is a really great web sight that I buy a lot of designs from and they have complete instructions that explain all of the above! And if you don’t find what you are looking for you can write an email and ask and they are great at quick responses and great answers. That web sight is Emblibrary.com, this is one of my favorite web sights. I love their designs, they stitch out beautifuly, I have never had any problems with any of their designs, and have never had problems getting help when needed!

  • Carolyn

I would love to see my instructions on using a PAL. I would like to add one to my sewing equipment, but do not totally understand how to use one. I look on the centering of my designs as a challenge, and a challenge that I would like to be the one coming out on top. Even though I understand the use of a print-out, target sticker etc., I still rely on the eye-balling method of placement.

  • Mattie

I want to make a tote. I just purchased a pattern for a Tampa tote and can’t wait to try it but now I don’t know if I should try the HoBO tote first. I’m sure I will try them both. I like the idea of outside pockets. Is there any way you can show more about adding both inside and outside pockets to tote and purses. with and without zippers. Many people want to be able to secure things and don’t know how to add these features. Also can you put something in about adding zippers or other idea’s to purses and totes. I always like to have them so things can’t fall out.. Thanks and keep up the great ideas in your blog and magazine

  • Karen Poole

I would love to see some of the favorite tips for embroidery from Nancy and Eileen that they did on Nancys show, I think it was the favorite 25 tips or something like that! Antything that teaches new techniques is great too. I LOVE the bag templates that Nancy and Eileen have designed! I have quite a few of them (not the newest few) and just love how easy it is to make a bag with them, in fact I combined the template of one of the bags with the embroidery from Eileens book on Contemporary accesories and made a really great purse for my daughter last year. It was the easiest bag I had ever made and she loved it.

  • Doreen

I’d like to see you go over the t-shirt alterations.

  • Joni Weed

Wow! I love the scallops and the circles. They compliment the fashion design so well.

  • Deb

I enjoyed the Mystery quilts you did back I think it was close to the start of Designs magazine. I did the 1st one by going through how to make it in the embroidery club I coordinate & that encouraged others to also do the 2nd one.

  • Sharon Bitting

Love your bag. Great idea to put the pocket on the outside. Really like the veriations on the bag. I would like quilting in the hoop. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Karen Poole

Hi Ginger, I had replied to another comment regarding this as well. There are some great web sights that do just this! Also, if you go to the web sight of the stanalizer brand web sight they usually have complete tutorials on all of this. Also, one of my favorite web sights not only has fantastic designs but they have an entire section covering all the proper stabalizers to use and for what, also they discuss toppers and when to use them. If you can’t find the answer you need you can email them and they are very quick to respond with the answer! The web sight is: http://www.emblibrary.com. They not only have complete tutorials they have a section on projects that you can look through and dow load. It is great to get ideas on how to use embroidery designs as well as what stabalizers to use for each thing. And if the project needs templates, they provide them!

I love reading your blog, all topics are of interest, just wish I had the time & supplies to do more.I need to learn how to do multi- hooping embroidery designs. Thanks for all your help and a chance to win!

I have been looking for a way to put a satin scalloped edge on my newest granddaughters quilt. You have just given me the inspiration I needed to complete the edging. Thanks

  • Latarsha Kurns

Thanks for this glorious article. One other thing is that most digital cameras come equipped with a new zoom lens so that more or less of that scene to get included by ‘zooming’ in and out. Most of these changes in the aim length are generally reflected within the viewfinder and on huge display screen on the back of the specific camera.

  • Debra

Sewing has saved my sanity!!! I became disabled at age 42. Divorced & the kids off to college across country, what does one do? Well, it is blogs like yours & the free shows on public TV that helps one get inspired again, learn & create. Thank you!!! I would love to see “more embellishments” for handbags, as well as very usable type bags, I.e., beach totes, everyday handbags, grocery totes, handbag with area for tablet or small computer, little dog carrier (for my chihuahua! LOL), etc. I love embroidery via machine or by hand. Let’s get really creative by adding removable flowers or pocket to display photo if the week on the outside if a tote. You do not realize how much we love & need your blog! Thank you!!!

  • great articles and stylish website, keep up with the good work guys.http://www.expectaculo.com

this web site; this website carries remarkable and genuinely excellent
    material designed for readers.

  • Good post. I learn something new and challenging on websites
I stumbleupon every day. It’s always exciting to read through content from
other authors and use a little something from other web sites.

I am looking forward on your next post, I will attempt to get
    the hang of it!
