I was telling my friend about my work day. “I watched online videos of THE Dream Machine Innov-is XV8500D from Brother. My conclusion: The machine is a dream!”
We both agreed it would be a good idea to see THE Dream Machine in person. I made an appointment to visit our friends, Carla Plant and Shannon Atmore from Arlington Sewing Machines, for a hands-on demo.
I only planned on staying for an hour but the machine was so much fun I just about closed the store!
Here are some of my favorite highlights from THE Dream Machine.
- Crisp & Clear! I didn’t expect to notice or appreciate any changes when viewing the LCD screen. My eyes aren’t that sophisticated. But that was absolutely the first thing that caught my attention. The colors and images are incredibly crisp and clear. When you view the built-in embroidery designs you can see them clearly on the large LCD screen. Or if you’re like me and load 5 similar versions of the same design and wonder which one is the right one—now there’s no doubt. We have certainly come a long way since the days of small monochrome LCD screens!
- Live view! THE Dream Machine features the InnovEye® 2 Technology. This means you can see a live view of the needle area on your screen. What does this mean? Imagine scanning your hooped garment then viewing the actual garment on screen. Then select and position embroidery designs on the garment. Now the project you envision is easier to create!
- Scan! Scan a drawing on the scanning frame and turn it into embroidery! Or load clip art from a USB stick and convert it to stitches! All of this can be done at the embroidery machine. It’s no longer a clunky process of sitting at your desktop computer with a scanner, then loading the image into embroidery software to convert the image to a design and then walking over to your embroidery machine to load the design. Whew! I’m tired just thinking and writing a run-on sentence about it! Now the process is streamlined – it’s all done at your embroidery machine!
- Massive Hoop! The maximum embroidery area is 9.5” x 14”. Imagine all the time and grief you can save by not having to rehoop.
- Disney! Whether you’re stitching for a kid or a kid at heart—the library of Disney designs is very extensive.
I was also impressed with the size of the designs.
Check out this princess design!
Carla and Shannon loaded the Minnie Mouse design.
The design is 12.63” tall. That’s one big mouse!
- I’ve seen the light! Oftentimes I lower the needle to double check the alignment of my design before I take the first stitch. But now I can use the Droplight™ LED Embroidery Positioning Marker to check alignment on THE Dream Machine.
- Never get confused about thread colors again! Sure, there’s a numbered thread color sequence we can all follow but more often than not, I still manage to get confused on which thread to load next. THE Dream Machine has the INNOVACHROME™ LED Thread Color and Monitoring System. It indicates the thread color I need to install next. The flower image on screen indicates it’s time to stitch the pink portion of the flower.
The light on the machine shows the same pink color! Wow!
- Details, details! Engineers noticed the details! It’s easy to love all the obvious technological advances in THE Dream Machine. But I also appreciate and enjoy discovering where improvements have been made. Sure they may be subtle but they mean a lot!
- Skid proof foot pedal. I’ve heard some people remove their shoes because their foot slips off the pedal. THE Dream Machine has a very comfy, skid proof foot pedal!
- New Stability Plus™ Frame. The 9 ½” x 14” frame has aluminum, rubber and ribbed corners. Here’s a close-up view of the rubber on the side of the hoop. The addition of the rubber secures the fabric and helps prevent slippage.
- Improved Storage for Feet! I had to do a double take when Carla held the foot storage container upside down. The feet don’t fall out!
- Keep track of the day and time! For those of us who get so engrossed in our sewing and embroidery projects, this feature is handy! Now we won’t forget to stop and eat or visit the husband and children! There is a handy display of the day and time on the machine.
These were just a few of my favorite features! I encourage you to stop by your local Brother dealer for a test drive. Even if you don’t think you’re in the market for a machine it’s still good to see the available features. This way when you are ready you will be better able to make an informed decision. If you want to learn more about the machine, visit the Designs Plus Newsletter for February! There’s also a special coupon for ibroidery.com.
Special thank you to Carla Plant and Shannon Atmore at Arlington Sewing Machine for giving me a tour of the machine!

10 years agoso hard to pick one since it is a dream machine! Excuse me ……had to wipe the drool :). So I think the ability to load or scan a drawing in and turn it into a design on the screen just seems so unreal. What a time saver. Love all these features Thank you for the review

Carol
10 years agoI love the fact that you can scan and do pictures to embroidery right on the machine! Also the positioning marker seems to be the “icing on the cake”. Whoever designed this machine spoke with people who embroider; the features reflect that.

Sherida Burch
10 years agoI love the larger hoop size. whose kidding I love everything about it.
Susan Kelly
10 years agoLove the large hoop!
zinobia
10 years agoI always have craved for a big hoop to avoid multi hooping.
secondly, with water soluble stabiliser being expensive and not available easily here I use net to embroider FSL items where net slips and spoils the design. So a non slip feature of hoop are just what I was always wishing somebody would think and innovate.
Third thing which I would love to give a thumbs up is ability to scan abilly to digitise at machine level and embroider. Is it just a basic digitising option or full fledge digitizer that can suffice all digitising needs.
Also can you resize a design? If yes does it take care of density, stitch length etc too?
Lots of more questions in mind. Will need to check all the features on brother’s website to add more likes if they are taken care of.
Thanks
Kathy

ALI CE CORNELSON
10 years agoAn awesome machine! If I could choose only one thing as my favorite, it would be the droplight. I love everything about the Dream Machine. I can see me using the drop light on everything I embroider.

10 years agoThe machine has many awesome features, but the scanner really has me intrigued.
Kim
10 years agoAs others have said it is hard to pick one. I like the laser dot for the needle position. Or maybe it is the rubber on the side of the hoops.
Jan Dick
10 years agoHow can you choose just one favorite feature?! I am very fortunate to own a Dream Machine. I sat down last Sunday morning for the first time in front of my machine. Keep in mind that I have NEVER embroidered anything – ever. I have no experience. So, I would have to say that my favorite feature is how user friendly the machine is. There are built-in tutorials, visual aids, visual “stops” so you don’t make a mistake and put out an eye or break your machine, and step by step walk through assistance as you go. I successfully embroidered Mickey Mouse from beginning to end with no struggles at all! LOVE LOVE LOVE my machine.

Joan Shriver
10 years agoWho wouldn’t love a bigger hoop? Love the Disney designs, also.
Audrey Goodwin
10 years agoI’ve done a good job most of my life to not covet my neighbors sewing machine, but this Dream Machine is sensory overload. The hoop size in conjunction with the screen size makes this disabled newbie quilter think she can conquer the world again. I thought I had forgotten how to dream or at least given up on dreaming, then ” the Dream Machine” comes along. You can bet I’m going to enter every contest from now on to get a shot at this beauty.
Judy Fletcher
10 years agoThis may seem simple; however, I’ve been piecing a lot lately and I love how easily I can sew a straight seam. In addition to all the other great things my Dream Machine can do, it’s great that it just sews so well.
Chris Sugden
10 years agoMy favourite feature on THE Dream Machine is the Droplight™ LED Embroidery Positioning Marker to check alignment. Fantastic feature!

10 years agoI attended a Stitching Sisters seminar in Dec ’14 in Fort Meyers, FL and had the opportunity to use the Dream Machine, and fell in love! In fact, I bought one that weekend!! My favorite thing about the machine just so far, if the screen. The fact it that is so large helps me to see how the design is going to look.
Leah Geary
10 years agoLove almost all of the features, but think the large hoop is great. New to embroidery and still learning how to rehoop. Have an Innovis 1500d with the largest hoop of 6 x 10. Would be great to have a bigger hoop.

10 years agoIt would be the large hoop!

10 years agoI just love everything about the Dream Machine, but if I have to pick one feature, it is the Laser Guide. My husband is very impressed with the machine as well. Right after I purchased it, I was embroidering one of the beautiful letters with the flowers and he came in and said ” I am not impressed very often, but I am really impressed with what this machine does.”

9 years agoI bought this machine a couple a months ago . left the country to travel ..before I left I did play a little in it . but what was happening ..when I embroidered , about 3,stitches in ..needle keeps breaking . what could be the problem ? About to return home and started thinking about it 🙁
Carla Plant
9 years agoPamela, There are different reasons for this to occur. Any machine can have this issue. It could be in the upper threading or a broken piece of thread in the top tension to name the most popular reasons. I suggest that you call the machine dealer that you purchased the Dream Machine from. They should try to help you solve the issue over the phone. You may end up having to take your machine in so that they can see and diagnose the problem. I’m thinking that it will be something simple.
SHARON BLAYLOCK

9 years agoCan someone direct me to a tutorial that shows you how to embroider a large design that is done by doing top part then bottom part of the design thus allowing you to embroider a very large design
Thanks
Carla
9 years agoSome designs that are sold are made to be embroidered in multiple hoopings. They will have a tutorial in pdf format on the design cd. If you have a design that you want to resize or that is larger than your machine’s maximum hoop size, it would have to be re-sized or split in digitizing software such as Perfect Embroidery Pro.

9 years agoIs the foot pedal completely slip proof? Sewing with shoes on is ok with it?
Carla Plant
9 years agoThe surface is has textured rubber on the top and can be used both with shoes and without shoes. It is wider then average for more stability. The bottom of it has big nice rubber grips. I have not heard the term “completely slip proof” used with a foot control before but this one is the closest that I’ve seen to it.
