Simple to Chic T-Shirt Remakes

When you get the opportunity work with a friend, work doesn’t feel like work.  My last big sewing adventure in 2015 was no exception. I had the pleasure of working with my good friend, Nancy Zieman, on our latest joint venture – Simple to Chic T-Shirt Remakes on Sewing with Nancy.  What a fun way to end the year!headshotBL

It all started last April at Nancy’s home in Wisconsin. During a social visit, we started brainstorming about a new project – an updated version of our popular Designer Necklines collection. A few sketches, a page or two of notes and we were off on a new journey.  Of course, the process takes a couple of months and is all done by long distance (thanks to email and text messages!), but before you know it, we had the makings of a fun new technique – Simple to Chic T-Shirt Remakes.blueBL

And then of course, it was time to shop. We sampled tons of t-shirts to find the right ones for this technique. We wanted to make sure the technique would work on readily-available blanks so we designed around ladies’ shirts at Kohl’s, Target and WalMart. We figured just about everyone has access to one of those three retail stores.  When I look back on the receipts, it looks like I was outfitting a softball team – I was buying t-shirts by the dozen!blackBL

But it was well worth it because this is my absolute favorite collection that I’ve ever designed. I love how wearable it is. When we photographed the samples at our studio here in Dallas, the stylists wanted to know where they could buy the embroidered shirts. I took that as a good sign. And Nancy and I had similar reactions when we presented the program on Wisconsin Public TV. Another good sign!grayBL

So what’s so different about this collection? It features classic designs that mimic ready-wear and a nifty finish that’s completed in the hoop for professional results. There are neckline, sleeve and side seam designs so you get a total package.  You can watch the series on your local PBS station or online at WPBS. Just click here to view.  http://wpt.org/SewingWithNancy/Video/simple-chic-t-shirt-remakes-part-one

Here’s your assignment this week:

Last week, Nancy asked her blog readers what t-shirt they liked best. How about if you do the same here so we can see if both sets of readers have similar taste?  Just tell us what t-shirt is your favorite and we’ll pick a random comment to win a copy of Simple to Chic T-Shirt Remakes!

I loved all of the ones you did. I especially love the brown, I have a brown blouse that has similar embroidery and I love it. But I can’t wear it anymore. So now I can copy it.
Thanks ladies as usual another winner!!!!!!!

Just in case, I read it incorrectly, I typically use Gildan. It’s a great tee and nice hand and soft too. Several different styles now to.

Hi Eileen! I have seen you on multiple programs demonstrating your techniques and tips. I’ve already tried to order the book which accompanies this program but it won’t be availible for several weeks! however something with a cotton spandex mix and softness against my skin would be #1. There’s a gal in the LA area who gets the best material for T-shirts and her fabric is sturdy but very soft! On the ready made side Guilden (I think that’s the way it’s spelled!) is soft and comes in various thicknesses. I love to embroider! Do you have your business in Dallas? I’m going to be there in a few weeks and would love to take a tour that is if one is offered! Thanks for the opportunity to share my thoughts!!

    • Cherry

Whoops! I thought you meant brand or fabric. My mistake! Now for the correct response! The black one because of the contrast of colors.

  • Shirley G

What a difficult task to decide which is my favorite! I love them all. I think I will choose the white with the blue embroidery because it would go with most of the pants I have and therefore I would get to wear it more often. (I cannot wear skirts.)

  • Tammy W.

I love them all, but any of the designs with the right thread just tends to pop on black.

  • Phyllis Mulligan

I am new to embroidery. My friend passed away and I was the lucky recipient of her machine. My sewing pals kid me about starting embroidery. They have the impression that I will make a shirt with a big peacock or oversize flowers. I also appreciate that your blanks came from Walmart, Target and Kohls. Definitely in my wheelhouse. I hope I can win the design so I can show my friends that embroidery can be elegant. I would wear the grey one because it has my colors.

The blue is my favorite! But I do like all of them.

  • Lauretta6

I like the one that Nancy has on.

  • Melanie

I love the black because the design reminds me of the intricate designs used on Indian inspired apparel. I love the bright colors against the black shirt. I wonder if these designs will work on shirts other than t shirts.

  • Tammy Campbell

I like the blue t-shirt with the designs that remind me of snowflakes. Wintery, but not Christmas themed.

i love them all, i think my favorite is the black paisley. I can’t wait to try on some that is just sitting in my closet waiting for a little umph (something a little extra) on them.

  • Janet

The gray. It is pretty and I believe it will hold up better in the long run (I would stain the white one and black is just not my color). I also like to taper the sides of ready made tee shirts to make them look neater.

  • Lynne

I like the blue shirt with white embroidery. I also like Eileen’s shirt. I really like the white with blue greek key design. It looks so different in white from the black shirt on Nancy’s site. All are beautiful.

  • Lois Van Ackern

  • Glenda Fowler

I like the black with white embroidery that Eileen is wearing. Black with white or ecru looks great.

  • Terry senko

The black t is my favorite, but the gray is a close second. They definitely don’t look homemade!

  • Cindy Lawrence

I love the design on the black tee. I can visualize it on many colors. Oh, yet another project. Lol. They are all beautiful.

  • Rita

I love them all, with the blue being the first tee I would attempt. I need to pull up the videos to watch, don’t know how I missed this new project.

  • Rene Bolton

My favorite is the gray with the green!

  • Darlene Lyons

I love the black one with what appears on my screen as orange and purple threads but would do mine in blue and green with the inlay that is shown in the one Eileen is wearing in the photo with Nancy. Eyelets are a nice touch but that layered look for me is perfect. Hope to get your book soon!! When will it be available for public purchase or will I be the lucky winner??? Curious minds want to know………….

I love the whole idea and would like to have tee shirts with any of the patterns. Because I am partial to the Greek Key design, I would try that design first.

I do love the one I made from directions in your Craftsy cla..

  • robert

je recherche le CD en france merci pour votre reponse

  • DeEtta Gibbons

My favorite tees are three quarter sleeve solid colored tees. Tees are very comfortable and can be dressed up or down. Your new designs will give them that special look . Congrats on designing a great idea that is easy and fun to do.

  • Lillie

Black with multi-color is my fave

  • Kristi Craft

My favorite t-shirt is the gray one with the green embroidery. The embroidery design reminds me of a paisley design, which seems to be something that I am drawn to. This shirt looks like it came from ready-to-wear; it definitely does not look home-made!

  • Eileen

The white with the blue geometric squares – it reminds me of sunny days in Greece…sigh…

  • Sheryl Colle

    Blue with snowflakes

  • Vicki B.

I love the black with red for first choice and blue with white for second.

  • Blanche Jacobsen

I really like the blue with white. I am very fond of blue.Looks like fun to make

  • Charmaine Erickson

I like the black one best but all are pretty I have a drawer of new t shirts waiting for decoration and I think this cd will do the trick.

  • Deb Watford

I like all of them, but my favorite is the blue with white embroidery. Enjoy watching Sewing with Nancy and thoroughly enjoy when you, Eileen, are her guest. You make embroidery look easy and many years ago gave me the courage to tackle my first embroidery project. thanks to both you and Nancy for great projects and the willingness to teach the rest of us!

  • Kathy S.

Love them all but the Dark Grey is my favorite of these

  • JD

I like the blue with the white on the neck and sleeves. Thanks for asking for a vote and can’t wait to see what the results are. There are a lot of votes so a lot of counting to do on your side.

  • [email protected]

I love the black Tee-shirt. Can the shirts be done without the eyelets and laces? Very nice.

  • Tammy

I love the one Nancy is wearing. I am thinking of doing the lacing up the back from the bottom, as well. I could insert some lace under that could hang below the hemline and at the bottom of the sleeve. What inspiration and would love to win the program.

  • Lauri

It’s difficult to choose! I think the gray with the green thread would be the first design I would try. I see adding a few beads to add a little extra bling. What fun!

  • Bernadette

    They are all truly lovely.

Also, whatever you have changed in your email format, it’s triggering warnings from email hosts regarding ‘phishing’ and ‘identity theft’. Please have someone in your web department take a look at the email template and see what’s been changed recently. Best regards!

  • Cara

I like the black shirt with white that Eileen is wearing. Both embroidery on the neckline and sleeves compliment each other very well

  • Tami

The black is my favorite. So versatile.

  • Sandra

Love the black with white Eileen is wearing.
I think these would make nice gifts.

  • Diane Cockman

I like the dark gray one the best. But I love all of them, too.

  • Patty

I like the blue shirt as its my favorite color!

  • Karen W

I like the blue w/ snowflakes, but my fave is the one Eileen is wearing!! I did this a few years ago, with a black tee with too-long long-sleeved tunic & turtleneck. I had to shorten the sleeves, then changed it to hip-length with an round-neck split-front & added crochet/chain-stitch tie strings. Whew! It was a lot of work & I’ll bet you found an easier way to do them! I used the excess from the sleeves & the bottom hem, for the facings — almost nothing leftover!

  • Brenda

I like the design on the black shirt Eileen is wearing in the first photo. Something about those swirls reminds me of my childhood Spirograph. My second favorite is the paisley design pictured on both Nancy in the first photo and on the black tshirt close up.

  • Becky M

All of them are great! I really like the black tee with the paisley design.

  • Josie Dinwiddie

I love all the shirt designs, but if I have to pick just one, I’d pick the grey shirt with the green design. It is the feathery swirls and the delicate wispyness to the middle pattern where it looks like a jelly fish. Very pretty.

  • Aline

I like the lightness of the blue with white one. The sleeve design adds an extra zip too.

  • Donna Fecteau

I like the black one that you are wearing in the picture the best i think, but the blue one that looks like snowflakes to me is a very close second.

  • Ann Brackett

I love the blue with the snowflakes.

  • Paula Hendrickson

I love the white t-shirt with the square design

  • [email protected]

I love the black shirt with the paisley. I just received my CD yesterday and this is the first design I am going to try.

  • CONCHITA

I like the black one with the paisley.

  • Lea Jones

I like the blue T-Shirt with the flowers on the sleeve. I saw this on Sewing with Nancy. It really looks easy.

  • Lynn Russell

I love the black tee shirt with the paisley design! Adding a portion of the design to the sleeves really complements it. I would add a couple of mirrored paisley designs on a back shoulder, too.

  • Nanette

Hi Eileen, I absolutely love these t-shirts! While shopping for a new sewing machine I considered buying one with an embroidery unit. But then I thought: Is it worth it ? Am I going to use it ? Watching these “Simple to Chic t-shirt remakes” epsiodes of you and Nancy made me understand the magic of an embroidery machine: Apart from the beautiful designs there’s the precision sewing and placement guides. Amazing ! I’m definitely going to buy one this weekend.

My absolute favorite is the blue shirt with the white flowers.

  • PremaSweezey

I love all the designs and ideas about the T-shirt make overs. But I have only one problem. I do not like the store made T shirts. I make my own. I would like to adopt these designs to my home made T shirts. Do you have any ideas as how to adopt these designs to a T-shirt that is cut from a pattern. Thank you

  • Anne F

I like the gray one. Including a link would be helpful as well.

  • Leta Smith

I like the blue with blue and white design. I would also like to do the designs in variegated thread! It looks like putting a modesty panel behind the opening would be easy and maybe in lace or contrasting color. I saw the program on Sewing with Nancy last week. I decided then I wanted to get this. Happy choosing!

  • Betty Wells

I like the black one with the paisley design. Love all the designs and would wear any of them.

    • Deandra

  • Deb McKerrow

I just saw the Sewing with Nancy on my local PBS station that features the t-shirt remakes. I love them all! I am a retired Sign Language Interpreter, and my wardrobe is full of very boring Sign Language Interpreter clothes. For many years I have worn JC Penney St. Johns Bay solid color long/short sleeve jewel neck tees. They are all dark colors, as required by my job. They last a long time, are comfortable and they are a good price, if you watch the Sales. But, I am now left with more than a few plain, dark, boring tees! I was going to donate my tees just to get rid of the boring clothes, but wait, I don’t have to! I love these designs, and I can’t wait to get this CDset! My retired wardrobe will be renewed! I would request that you start doing instant downloads. We are full time RVers now, and I have to be careful of extra weight. I can’t have a lot of CDs, I don’t have the space, either.

  • Leta Smith

I like them all, but especially the scalloped one. I really like the sleeve designs, also. Those could be used just by themselves if you wanted . A really unique design program!

    • Leta Smith
