Holiday Lettering & Monograms

March Monogram of the Month

Now that I live in Texas, St. Patrick’s Day passes by without much fanfare but that’s not the case in other parts of the country. In Chicago, they dye the river green!  In New York City, they host the USA’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade and on Savannah, GA’s official St. Patrick’s Day parade website, they countdown the days, hours and minutes until their annual parade time.

As an embroiderer you can celebrate the upcoming Celtic celebration in a subtle way by adding a  petite shamrock to your monogram.  Think of it as a nod to your heritage or just an expression of Spring cheer.  If you do, include a couple of shades of green to add emphasis to the Celtic accent. I made this monogram in Bernina Artista Software. Here’s how.

Open BERNINA Embroidery Software DesignerPlus. Select the Monogram icon and click on the Borders tab at the top of the menu.  B1

Select MB4. B1a

Click on Add to add another border. B2

Insert .25 (inches) in the Offset box.  Select Candlewicking from the Outline menu. Click Ok.  B3

Click on Lettering in the Monogramming box. Select a font and type the letters in each box. B4

Merge the Shamrock design into the monogram.  B5

Save the design and send it to your machine. Hoop tear-away stabilizer with linen in a 4” x 4” hoop and stitch the design.

I’d like to share a little Celtic cheer with you so feel free to download the shamrock.

A rose when doing something for my Mom and a tulip when doing something for my daughter.

  • Susan J

I would add a seashell to remind me of my favorite place, Anna Maria Island FL. Wish I was there now instead of snowy cold (but gradually becoming warmer) Ohio! Congratulations, Jeannie G! Enjoy that fabulous Babyock embroidery kit.

  • judy wong

How about a little “horseshoe” ?… everybody can use a little luck sometime!

  • Gena Allen

A daisy is always good but depends on the person it’s being given to.

  • Pat R

I like to add a small dog face to remind me of my girls(dogs). They make me laugh everyday and love them dearly.

  • barbara ann

I would add a FROG because I Fully Rely On God.

  • jo shedd

I like a little butterfly someplace around a monogram. Seems it just adds a special signature touch.

  • Connie W

I might add a ladybug because my sister and I met and became friends with several girls at a sewing event. We formed a little group and named it “the Ladybugs”. We picked that name because all the projects we embroidered that day at the event were ladybugs. We keep in touch and meet as often as possible, even though they are almost 2 hours away. Great friendships really are formed from sewing, quilting and embroidery!!

  • Lilia O.

I like to use one of the outlines in my software to give monogramming a professional look 😉

  • Valerie Jennings

A little rose in memory of my Mother.

  • Jennifer P

i would love to add a Texas Longhorn to my siggie, but alas, it is copyrighted. I’ve never thought before, but I will have to come up with something original.

  • Caroline Burzan

I usually leave the monograms with just the outline – no added designs.

  • Terri Willner

Since I personalize things for my figure skater, of course I’d add a skate!

  • Barb

    Flowers

  • Jill Hicks

I would love to add a musical note.

  • Darlene Pino

A pine tree since my last name means that.

  • Beth R

I love to add a small flower below the monogram.

  • Brenda Sutton

I would add a small cat. Love my fur babies.

  • Debbie

When I monogrammed my work shirt I placed a needle and thread motif in place of the I in my name

  • Monica

    A Sewing Machine 🙂

  • Marilyn Weiss

Fleur de lis is my go-to embellishment!

  • sue

I love monograms, but prefer to use just a simple outline or border design with the monogram.

  • Rita

    musical note / flowers

  • Frances Powell

I haven’t even thought about adding a signature design to my projects. Now I’m going to really think about what I want it to be.

  • Missy k

I love the font used in the photo of the embroidery. I would love to know what font it is. I love to add hearts to my embroidery

  • Bonnie Gray

I had never thought of adding something like that to a monogram. I think I would have to say a thistle to reflect my Scottish heritage. Thanks for the idea!

  • Shirley Clark

I love to use pretty frames for monograms. It just adds an more decorative touch.

  • Mary

I never thought of using one in embroidery, but I do add a heart when writing to the grandchildren. Sometimes an owl. Will have to check on this more closely.

  • Linda Ladd

    Normally a pink heart

  • carol lewis

I would add a crane bird for my maiden name.

  • irene Sullivan

Shamrock Texas has a big celebration on St. Patrick’s Day
    I would add a flower.

  • Sue McGovney

How Bout adding a lighthouse or. Rab?

  • Jean

I would add a small owlan owl .

  • Donna G.

I like to add small swirls, flowers or accents to the sides of my monograms. They set the monogram off nicely.

  • vera

I would add a dragonfly or a calla lily.

  • Pamela Beeth

I have used my own initials to make a little design. It is so small, I can put it on most of the designs I do without disturbing the design at all.

  • Debbie Wakelee

I would add a small spool of thread!

  • Charlotte B

I like to do an embossed background when I do a monogram as I mostly monogram on towels. It really helps the lettering pop right out!

  • Ellen

    Swirls or a flourish
    Ellen in Tx

  • Susan

“star” – everyone likes a star!

  • Shirl R

I like just the monogram itself, maybe a border, nothing else.

  • Berenice

    Why, a dragon of course…

  • Wanda H Leffingwell

    I would add a flower

  • Darlene Gerber

If I was to add one it would be a Buckeye! They remind me of my state Ohio, and my favorite team The Ohio State Buckeyes!!

  • Marcia Dumas

I would like a little dolphin, they are always happy because they live in the ocean and are wonderful to see in action.

  • Nancy Weber

I don’t usually add designs to a monogram. I do always add a border or frame of some sort. To me that just makes it look more professional. Now that I see one done with an added design, I think I will give it a try!

  • Ann B

Swirls or a Flourish or sometimes a frame. Love this idea. I am not consistent with my own monogram… Maybe I will begin! 🙂

  • Orvalee Roe

I am new to machine embroidery and have not tried to do a monogram. Partly because of what my monogram would spell ORK. Lol. However this has got me thinking I could add a signature design to just my first and last initial.

  • Cathy

I would add a leaf to mine, but not sure what someone else would like.

  • Joyce Andersen

I like just a little flourish- something understated and elegant. Unless, or course, the monogram itself is wild and crazy, then all bets are off!

  • Donna F

When appropriate I like to add a little heart. Congratulations Jeannie G.

  • Adeline Brill

Actually the shamrock is perfect for my DIL. She is a “wee” bit Irish and I can make a bookmark for here using these directions. Thank you!

  • Kim Fisher

    something sewing/embroidery related

  • Patty

I like to add a little flower.

  • Pam

I add a heart where/when I can to add a punch to the monogram.

  • Valerie Gwara

I,and my sisters, are cat persons, so I’d add a cat face

  • Ann

A diamond because diamonds are a girls best friend. 😉

  • Saundra Romanus

I would like to add a dachshund. I have two and they are my “little loves”! Saundra

  • Pam

You got me thinking. Never done many before.

  • Deb E

I would add a tulip. One of my favorite flowers in spring.

  • MoeWest

I would add a sewing machine for myself. I like to choose something that the person can relate to. The shamrock would be a good one for our Irish heritage too.

  • Gyanja

Flip flops or palm tree with beachy colors for my pool bag!

  • Kristal

I love to add a flower to my designs. It has become my trademark!

  • Mary Ann Genre

    Dragonflies!

  • Penny Kitzmiller

It depends on who I’m sewing for….everyone I sew for has a different personality, so I add something I know they would like. Me myself I love dragonflies tho! Thank you for the great tutorial!

  • Vicky Isliefson

A clock face with the hands at five minutes to twelve: “just in time”, because I do everything at the last minute!

  • Barb

I love pinecones! I live in a place surrounded by pine woods and love to embroider pinecones with a spray of pine needles.

  • Melissa Rosander

I don’t always add one because it’s not always appropriate, but for my personal monogram… must have a butterfly!

  • Kathy

I like to add a Polish Eagle to reflect. It shows how proud I am of my ancestors.

  • Pat Black

I’d take the easy-peasy way, and after composing the monogram, after I place the hoop in the machine{my Ellisimo] and press the border/satin stitch option on the machine, and have the exact border to surround the design

  • Anna Hollar

Scrolls are always generic and quite charming for all.

  • Karen

I only add something if they want something. I have never done my own monogram.

  • C.K

I like to add whatever matches the persons interests. This makes it really personal and gives me lots of variety in my embroidery!

  • KKN

I always use a very small silver star. It has meaning for me and it is tiny and not obtrusive.

  • Mary Haggenmaker

The most monogramming I do is for men’s handkerchiefs at Christmas. There are several son-in-laws, grandson-in-laws that look forward to their Christmas handkerchiefs. Sometimes I put a little scroll on each side of the monogram.

  • Joan M

Thanks for the encouragement to do a monogram. I have never done one and am in the process of making a purse. A monogram on the front pocket would be the crowning touch. Perhaps with a small rooster because we raise chickens here on the farm and I love hearing them crow.

  • C J

I really enjoy a small paw print but the shamrock is a great idea and could be used in lots more applications.

  • LCB

I like laurel wreaths around my monograms 🙂

  • Robin Farley

I would love to use a dragon fly because the are so graceful and they remind me of my aunt who passed away a few years ago.

  • Elaine

I use a cat paw on my gift items for friend and family.

  • Karen W

Adding another design or logo totally depends on whether the embroidery is for myself or someone else!! For me, a tiny cluster of grapes is my go-to design. My kitchen & dining rooms have a grape theme – everywhere. Everyone knows that just says “me”! If not that, then I’d like lots of Fleur-de-lis designs.

  • Lisha

I like to use either a tiny honeybee or fleur de lis for myself.

  • Debe

Flourishes or stamps (my software calls them that)

  • Tonya Taylor

I would add a HEART. God is love and hearts are a symbol of love.

  • Ann Wright

I would like to thank you for showing something in the software program Bernina Artista.
I have had that software since they begin calling it The Customizer. That was a great software, then it changed to Bernina Artista ver.1.0.I really got to loving it when ver.3 came out. as the newer versions came out, they don’t seem to be as user friendly to me. I would add what ever is in season. The possibilities are endless. Thanks for the free designs & lessons & producing a great magazine for us.

  • Carolyn

I usually add something that relates to the person for whom I am doing the monogram. This little clover is perfect for my Irish friend, Jodie.

  • Barbara

I like to keep things simple, although the idea of adding a “special touch” sounds like a lot more fun!

  • Doreen

A moose for my oldest brother, shamrock for my friend.

  • Pamela Bynes

I’d like to have a heart with a cross on the inside. This reminds me of Christ in my heart.

  • Pat

Hmm, if I was going for country of origin then it would be a Scotch Thistle + a Shamrock + a spray of Wattle for Scotland, Ireland & Australia.
For just me – it would be a cat & a parrot. Have had a cat for ever! And a parrot for most of my life. Love both.
My daughter would be a butterfly.
My youngest son would most likely want some orange & white checks for his volunteer work. Now that would make a great border!
The older son a piece of Leggo as he does Leggo modelling for exhibitions.
Been working on a motorcycle for DH.
    The possibilities are endless.

  • Nancy King

It depends on who it is for. My grandkids are into sports so I might put a soccer ball or football around the monogram
